First of all, please note that "atheist" is one of those rare words that violates the old "i before e, except after c" rule -- and it should not be capitalized, because atheism is neither a formal philosophy nor a religion.

Like most (but not all) atheists, I am a philosophical Materialist. This means I think my conscious awareness is an emergent property arising from the complexity of my living human brain. When I die my blood will stop circulating, no longer delivering oxygen to my brain and body and no longer removing carbon dioxide. My metabolism will stop producing the ATP which fuels both my muscles and my thoughts. I will become unconscious and then I will simply cease to exist. I expect the sensation will be somewhat like what I experienced before I was born -- just nothing at all. I will not have "gone" anywhere -- simply died. The end.

I always say it is very convenient for people to believe that God doesn't exist and that there is no such thing as hell. Without God or the fear/fact of hell, people could just rely on science and their own intellect to guide them through life and I suppose that would work. However, it only takes a moment to sit down and think about how complex the human mind/intellect/psychologically... our emotions, our ability to hope, dream, speak, and see things come to pass in our lives. Then to go back and read in the bible where these things were mapped out by Holy Spirit led men who allowed God to write the bible through them and you can see how our lives don't just begin and end here. We are eternal beings going through transformations as we exit one state of being into the next (3 all together). Do you really think it's random or some violent chaotic big bang started it all? I would like to think that it took intelligence far beyond all human understanding to set this universe in motion. To think that science alone or fallible, violent, carnal, inconsistent, and untrustworthy human beings have anything to do with our complex design and existence is to say that a monkey could do it given it has about 60 million years. Oh wait a minute...many of you already think that!!

I will be planted 6 feet deep in the ground to decay and rot, unless I choose cremation, at which point I will be ashes. Can I be scattered in your yard?

What happens after I die? My body decays and I am cremated. Whatever I did on Earth, good or bad, will continue to live on.

Into the firey depths of the nearest crematorium, from there I hope I get sprinkled on the grass at our beautiful house, to be used as a toilet for our beautiful dogs.

My body is going into the ground, where it will then decompose.
Will my essence still exist?
Perhaps, but it seems evident I am not supposed to know the answer to that.

I believe you go in the ground. I do not believe in the afterlife. Your body just becomes part of the earth. I do not believe in any kind of spirit or soul.

I dont think that the human mind is capable of understanding what happens after death. I dont believe that there is any god, but I do think that an afterlife is possible. I think that we will all find out what happens to us after we die, when we die.

No where. I will cease to exist.

If you mean my dead corpse? I am thinking of having my body cryonically frozen. So I'll be in a deep freeze. How's that sound?

My conscious mind will dissasemble into its constituent compounds and particles, and I will materially relicarnate into whatever it is that I will reincarnate into.

But once again, my memories, thoughts, beliefs, likes, dislikes, and the like will be gone.
