One of the corrections that showed up on my evaluation said that I made the mistake of asking for seconds. The evaluation said that it was impolite to ask for more food, because that is telling the hostess that she did not provide enough food for you.

While I have never thought about this before, I was wondering if this was true. Is it INDEED impolite to ask for more food when attending a dinner party? Is it perceived as greedy, or perhaps that not enough was provided to you?

What do you all think? I shall bear the responses in mind for future dinner parties.

For sake of argument, this is a fancy dinner party in someone's home. It is a sit-down dinner and not a buffet. I go to a few of these every once in a while.

I would never ask for more food. If it is offered, you might say: it was very delicious and I would like to have another little serving. That does not sound greedy, that is just telling her you liked the dinner.

Not necessarily. Many hostesses consider having seconds a compliment, because it means that you liked the food so much that you wanted to have more. In general, you should always do what the hostess does, so if there is food left and she has seconds, you should feel comfortable with asking for some.

If you know there is more & everyone seems to have had enough, then don't hesitate to ask for seconds. Your hostess may feel flattered that you liked it so much. However, if all the food seems to be gone, then of course keep your mouth shut & don't embarass them.

I can see why that is what they would say. but i don't think it is impolite. Some people do think if you finished your plate that they didn't feed you enough. or you could See if they ask if they want seconds and if they don't you should ask for seconds.

If you don't ask for seconds, then the host might think the food isn't good.

asking for seconds isn't as bad as accidently ripping one at the table when reaching for something.
