All these answers reek of unimaginative thought processes. There is no originality at all. I am disgusted.
In every story there must be a villain to make it interesting. Judas is one of those fictional characters without whom the bible would be even duller than it is, and that is very difficult to achieve. As I said once on YA: There is more action in the yellow pages than in the bible. It is the dullest, most obscure, opaque and uninteresting book ever. It is designed as a virtual hammer to wham on the nails of the naive, so it´s a tool (with contradictions). As a litterary piece, it doesn´t speak well of the hypothetical god´s writer´s ability. Sorry I got carried away, but I felt provoked by the chasm of stupidity in the others´answers.

Yes - Jesus told the twelve one was a devil from the beginning and that was Judas. Fair not really - but God knew his heart .Judas was very religious but lost.He believed but yet never repented. The bible said Judas went to his own place that's in proverbs I believe. So in other word Judas went to his own Hell.Which would be the same for all. There are different levels of punishment in Hell - yet still hot.
Just like we will be rewarded different in Heaven .

You could ask the same about Satan and every individual that goes to hell. This is a question about predetermination.
God can tell by a persons inner self what choices they will make. But they have a free will to make those choices.
God sends everyone His Word. It is up to them to receive it or not. "Trust in the Lord, and be saved". Or go your own way.
It is also like the two that were crucified with Jesus. One asked Jesus to remember him when Jesus came into his kingdom. The other said, if your really the Christ then save us and yourself.

Yes, I do. My role in life is to worship God and bring glory to His name. My other role is to increase His kingdom. Judas was meant to play his part just as I am meant to play mine.

I think that if he had not betrayed Jesus, someone else would have. However, free will is always in play so he did what he did because he wanted to.
