I dont know why they teach bilingual i grade school, I dont allow my 7 year old to go to it i school because i would rather teach her myself. believe it or not our spanish in New Mexico is somewhat different than the one they teach. shouldnt they focus more on helping the kids learn english rather make our children learn spanish, seems a bit backward to me dont you think? i know they have esl classes but why make our kids learn spanish??

I agree, they should emphasize English. Your children should not be forced into a school that teaches in both English and Spanish. You're right, the school is accommodating to the illegals. Bilingual education is not good for the illegals...it will hinder their learning. Perhaps that's why our schools are failing. The more we accommodate to the illegals, the more they will demand. It's bad enough that they are going to the schools without paying taxes and overcrowding our schools. Now they want to be taught in their language.

The spanish they teach in schools is the proper Spanish from Spain anyways. So they will be learning to speak the language correctly and not use slang. Learning a different language can be very benificial to children, and help them later on. In high school in my state you need a language course to get a college prep seal on your diploma, and they have a choice of languages they can choose from. I teach my daughter at home as well, but she will take formal classes as she grows older.

No American should be forced to learn Spanish. I'd home school my children, too. There is no legal reason that our children should have to learn Spanish. Maybe you all should go into the school to get some answers! In today's society, I think I'd home school my children anyway, with the threats of gangs and violence, I'd be a nervous wreck to let my kids go to school!

It is good to learn a second language. Almost all high schools in the country, and many primary schools, teach foreign languages. Most have a choice of 2 or 3 languages, but some smaller ones don't. Foreign language is part of the standard education curriculum and I believe that no student should be allowed to graduate without taking at least 20 credits of foreign language classes. If you really object that much, home school your kid.

I believe it is very helpful to learn a foreign language. However children should be offered CHOICES of the foreign language to learn.
My son has had both Japanese and Spanish in school.......he also could have chosen from Latin and German.
But if a school is JUST offering (or forcing!) Spanish as the only option out of a sense of need for children to speak both languages in New Mexico--that is just plain wrong in my book.
Spanish is NOT the language of the US. English is.

I don't think that the school is forcing their students to learn Spanish. In my school, it is necessary to take a foreign language and pass it, but they don't force you to learn Spanish. The student can pick whichever foreign language they want. The majority of the students choose Spanish, because they see everybody speaking it, and they want to understand and talk it to. And children are exposed to English all the time in school, home, and everywhere they go. We have English classes, and take them throughout ever grade in school. We are always being exposed to English, and why not take a step to learning a new language? Especially when that language is the second most spoken in the United States.

Immersion is the best way to learn a new langauge. Bi-lingual education, in which you teach a student most subjects in his familiar language, while trying to teach him another, doesn't work nearly as well.

I myself have my son enrolled in a Dual Immersion Program and he loves it. Nobody in my family is bi-lingual and the way things are here in California I think it is best to be bi-lingual. He started in pre-school being taught 90% in Spanish and 10% in English, it will progress more to English as the years go on, Kinder 80%/20%, 1st 70%/30%, etc. by the time he is in 5th grade he will be 100% bi-lingual. He hasn't lost his English and is doing great with his Spanish. This is NOT a mandatory class its a chosen option and has a limited enrollment. It is based in our local public school (of which I also work for) and not a private school. I am not rich either. I just think it is beneficial to him to have a second language. In our school district people who are bi-lingual get paid more than those who are not.

of course they should make the kids learn english. i have worked in a classroom, 29 students, 27 born in mexico. 1 born in the US the other born in pakistan. both of these students were fluent in spanish, they are in 2nd grade. their home lang. is english and pakistani, i asked them.
why are they fluent? because since they started kindergarten, they have been in a school that is predominately spanish speaking, all teachers speak spanish to all the students. all texts books and class library, spanish books. all written work and work posted on bulletin board, in spanish. wait, i thought we were in america? i could not communicate with most of these students because they did not speak english and i do not speak spanish.
if you make the kids learn in english, have everything in english, they will be fluent within 3 years. the proof? in the two non hispanic students....a black girl and a pakistani boy, both speaking spanish as if they were born to it. cant the mexican kids learn in the same way? why are they different? these two children did not have a chance, they had to sink or swim in the spanish classroom....they swam. cant the mexican kids do the same?

Well Spanish should be taught by classes on Saturday not in school. It should be separate unless this is your official language.
