A month ago I took in 2 puppies dumped out here in the country. Got both pups back to health and both were very frolicky and energetic. The smallest pup became sick and wasted away to nothing within 3 days of 1st. symptom and unfortunately died. Vets diagnosis was Parvo. 2nd pup has just started same symptoms today. I am on disability and cannot afford any more vet bills not even putting him to sleep. So I am thinking of having him shot to assist in his death. I dont want him to suffer the way the 1st did its terrible!!! Is this wrong? Is there a better solution?

For those who may be interested...I read some of your comments, then tried to call shelter and vet. Both were closed for wkend.Vet charges $100 to make after hour calls +chg.of shot to put to sleep. Sry folks but already in debt due to 1st. pup.I got up all night long to force fluids(pedialyte) . By morning pup no longer gets up and barely moves his head. I could take it no longer he was suffering to much and stools turned bloody.By 8:00 Sat. morn we put him down.Do I feel guilty for it? NO!!! I stopped his pain. The pups were in a weakened state from being dumped in the first place and I am angry at the people who do such things to defenseless animals!! Dont blame me for the decision I had to make. I AM NOT THE ONE WHO CLOSED MY DOORS!!!

It is very possible that since you saved these animals, the vet will do it for free. Call them and find out, and explain the situation, and ask them what they can do to help. Good luck and God bless you!

You are not to blame. You didn't go get these responsibilities. They were dumped on you. Parvo is a hideous, ugly way to die. Even 24 hour vet nursing doesn't mean they will survive. A quick, painless death is the best alterative to not being able to treat them at a vet. I KNOW how hard it is to get a healthy pup into a shelter. I KNOW how expensive it is to treat. I KNOW how ugly a death it causes. A better solution? I rally don't know of one, since lethal injection isn't an option for you right now. Just be sure the person you get to do this is very ethical and will do his or her level best to kill instantly. A shot that severs the spine at the base of the skull is quickest. It may be a bit messier, but it is most humane for the pup. I am so sorry you have to deal with other people's irresponsibility.

If you really cant afford it call the pound or your local shelter and let them know about your situation. They should be able to help you. But from what you say it wont take long for this puppy to die now that it shows symptoms. It may not even have what the other puppy had. Worst case situation, and no one and i mean no one is willing to help you, I suggest leaving it on the vets door steps but that is drastic and I am sure that some one will help you. You can even ask the vet if you can pay in monthly payments or donate food to the shelter if they will help you out with the puppy.. good luck and I hope everything works out.

Yes it's wrong.. Have you ever seen someone shoot a dog in the head?? Explain your story to the vet and I am sure that any vet worth his salt, would help you out with this.. Especially given that the dog has parvo.. Come on.. If you really loved animals, you wouldn't even think about doing this.

If the person doing the shooting is a very sure shot ,that would be better than the same kind of death the first pup went through .
BUT having a dog euthanized is the most humane way to 'put a dog down' It is both quick and painless.
Puppies and elderly dogs usually never recover from parvo.

Any decent shelter or humane society will take the dog and euthanize it for you. Parvo is a highly infectious illness! Sadly the dog or puppy who has it SUFFERS terribly!!! Every hour that goes by the animal suffers more. Take this poor dog immediatly.

I could never look a puppy in the face only to shoot it! Yes it's wrong, call your vet and expalin the situation to him. Any vet that has any kind of heart will help you and the pup out.

Assisted death, done humanely, is better. Have you tried contacting a rescue? This puppy has a chance, with vet care. If you need help locating one, send me an email.

I can see that your heart is genuinely good natured in this post, so if anyone gets mad at you about suggesting it don't let it get to you.

However, you can usually get a local shelter to euthanize dogs for very cheap. If I were the dog, I would rather be shot than suffer through Parvo, but it would definitely make you feel better to be able to euthanize him silently. Shooting the dog is not going to be traumatic for him (he won't know what's happening) but it will be for you. I, personally, wouldn't be able to handle it.

You also might give him to a local shelter who may be able to help him recover.

It's up to you, but you have a good heart so don't let people get onto you. Shooting animals was the most humane method of euthanasia in the US until just a few decades ago, and still is in most of the world.
