If mid-east countries are run by extremists who misinterpret Islam, as is often pointed out, does that mean the majority of Muslims in these countries are oppressed and secretly wish to overthrow their govt?

First of all, most Middle-Eastern Muslim countries are not run by Muslim extremists, but by secularists who sometimes use the peoples' allegiance to Islam for their own ends. Secondly, they are often oppressed, even in supposedly "free" countries because the people want their government to be in line with Islamic law and their leaders refuse. They only want Islam in the picture when it suits them.

I've been to Turkey-Egypt-Saudi Arabia- Jordan- I also know Lebanon is not an extreme country. The only country that is strict religiously with "religious police " is Saudi Arabia. theya re the conservatives in the Arab region. bu the way only about 12% of muslims are arab. the majority are african-asian- and western muslim are aining numbers fast. Most countries are fine with their government and saudia arabia does a lot of accomidating to women as much as segrgating them. They don't have open sex on television (which is respectfu of the femalew body) they have amll that have special floors for women only so they can shop without all the grab. even salons- makeovers etc.- they clothes teh zoo and have a women onlt day so they can take off their garb and visit the zoo with the kids. they also give private screens at reasturants so you can take off the garb and enjoy yoru dinner. Its different from ou culture but you can find good things these governments do for thei rpeople and these people understand their culture -which most americans do not. also health care is affordable and realistic. Real oppression is when you governemt nis so focussed on capitalism peopel can not get proper health care in the most pwerful counrty in the wrld. All the resources we have and many people can't go to the doctor when they are sick.

No. They are taught to project their anger on irrelevant outsiders, and to let their own governments off the hook.
