different colors, shapes but same smell. what is the difference?

If you throw in red onions it adds a touch of bright color. If you throw in green onions that adds other color/ If you throw in Vidalia they are sweet and great in salads to eat raw. If you have a dish where you carmelize the onions Vidalias add more intensity from their sugar.

They are not all the same. Try a few different ones and learn to live better. They don't all smell the same and taste the same and appearance does count in making something fun to eat.

Red onions are lovely in salad because they are not so strong. Spanish onions are great big things. Don't forget that chives, garlic and allium are in the same family too. Variety is good for you and good for nature. It keeps a mixture of genes going.

You must have a very pedestrian nose. Different onions do smell differently.
