My favorite is Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak, & Stone Crab (Grand & State, 7 blocks away - not to be confused with Joe's Crab Shack!) It is fairly expensive, but worth it. The seafood is very fresh and the service is great. It is run by Lettuce Entertain You. In Chicago that means you're pretty much guaranteed to have a great meal. This would be a great complement to a stay at The Peninsula.
I think you might enjoy these too:
-Bistro 110 (French, right off of Michigan Ave. near the Water Tower, about 3 blocks away)
-Ben Pao (very reasonably priced Chinese, Illinois & Dearborn, 9 blocks away, also a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant)
-House of Blues (go for the Gospel Brunch on Sunday, Kinzie & Dearborn, about 11 blocks)
-Heaven on Seven (Cajun/Southern, Rush & Ohio, 4 blocks away)
-Frontera Grill (James Beard Award-Winning Mexican, Clark & Hubbard, about 11 blocks)
-Ann Sathers (Swedish, best cinnamon rolls in the city, take the red line el to the Belmont stop - 929 W Belmont is on the same block as the station)
I hope this helps. Have fun!

There are so many good restaurants that is a tough question so I will answer you with 2 I enjoy that are near your hotel. They are both in an area called River North which has lots a food options.
I would try either of these, they are both run by the same chef who got the 2007 James Beard Award. Frontera is more casual and more reasonable.
FRONTERA GRILL & TOPOLOBAMPO
445 North Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60610
Phone: 312-661-1434 | Fax: 312-661-1830
Celebrity chef Rick Bayless (his latest gig is "Iron Chef America") defines authentic regional Mexican cuisine for north-of-the-border diners at Frontera and Topolobampo, where the latter provides fine dining and the former offers a rustic take. Devotees wait in three-margarita lines for Bayless' imaginative appetizers and entrees. Our tip: Arrive early for the Saturday-only brunch, and don't miss the enchiladas mole and the Iroquois white-corn pancakes.
Or try
Nacional 27
(312) 664-2727
325 W Huron St, Chicago, IL
he "27" in the name refers to 27 Latin American nations, and this restaurant's cuisine is equally inclusive. Dining at Nacional 27 will satisfy your hunger, quench your thirst and expand your vocabulary, as well, with menu items such as pupusas (stuffed homemade tortillas), chimichurri (cilantro and chili salsa), chayote (an apple-like squash) and boniato (a Cuban sweet potato). Nacional 27's decor is sleek and dramatic, with tubular lighting fixtures, blond wood, an elegant bar and a spacious dining room that doubles as a dance floor on weekends, when a deejay keeps the Latin rhythms coming. Diners can choose from aperitivos, seafood cocktails, empanados, arepas and entrees. Look for geographically specific dishes, such as lemon- and garlic-roasted chicken Cubano and snapper Brasileno, cooked with boniato, coconut and brazil nuts.
For breakfast or lunch I would recommend
Kitsch'n River North
(312) 644-1500
600 W Chicago Ave
Chicago, IL

U have to have the Pizza! Right off the mile, there is Gino's East (very good) or near rush street is Giordanos (the best). Go hungry! The Pizza is big and will fill you up (see the web site below).
The mile offers so much in the way of good food, but Pizza is the best way to go in Chicago.
If you want a really good place for Breakfast, its Lou Mitcheals.......oh boy the best morning food in the world.

Strega Nona (italian) right by Wrigley Field on Southport Street. Either Ba-Ba-Reeba, 1492, or Cafe Iberico for spanish food. Tango Sur for Argentinean, actually a few steps down of Strega Nona. Lou Malnati's for pizza.

Wishbone serves all day but they are KNOWN for their breakfast.. they call it "southern reconstruction cooking"
It is amazing.. try the shrimp and grits, or crawfish cakes with eggs and homefries/grits.. or you can have crab cakes or salmon cakes as well... the pancakes are unbelievable.. see menu below..
There are 2 locations and both will be busy but so worth it!

It's not on the Magnificent Mile, but Reza's on Ontario is probably my favorite.
