There are nice hiking trails in Topanga Park near Malibu. Parking is very cheap if you park on the street. I don't know how much the parking is in the lot. There are other parks around there too like West Rogers. There are a bunch of places you can go down the Pacific Coast Highway to find hiking. It should also be cooler there. Also, there are nice hiking spots in Angeles National Forest. You could find free parking in some places there. Also you could go hiking in the Hollywood Hills but it is not as nice.

Been to San Diego yet? I live in North County (Encinitas) and at 5 pm Friday the outside temp is a pleasant 78 degrees. Joshua Tree is beautiful but it is WAY too hot to go there this time of year, especially with a baby. Lots of places to hike in San Diego, including Palomar Mt. area in the northern part of the county. I like Palomar because it seems so far away, yet not all that far away. There's a nice little pond hike, mountain hikes, and then hikes past the observatories on Palomar Mountain. The big observatory is open during certain days/hours and is very interesting inside.
Given the heat and humidity I think you'd want either the beach areas or the mountains, not the deserts.
You could camp there if there's room in the campground. Also many other places to hike (see Jerry Schad's book Afoot and Afield San Diego). Don't look for hotel near downtown this weekend though as the ComicCon (Comics convention) is down there and although the sights are like Holloween all weekend, the hotels there are all booked up.
If you like hiking make sure you have the two best books for the Los Angeles area: John Robinson's Trails of the Angels and Jerry Schad's Afoot and Afield Los Angeles. With those 2 books you'll never have to get hiking suggestions from Yahoo again!

There's nice hiking around the Santa Monica Mountains. Near the beach and cool.
In the Angeles Forest, there are a few hikes and it's very close to LA. There's a small place called Chantry Flats, where you can take a short shaded (for the most part) hike to the Sturtevant waterfall, or take the Winter Creek loop alongside a stream.
About 85 miles from LA, there's San Jacinto State Park. It's near Palm Springs, so it's really hot, but you can take the amazing aerial tram ride that takes you 8000 feet above sea level, where temperatures are much cooler (but I still recommend checking the weather). Good hiking on top of the mountain. If your willing to spend money though: $21.95 for adults, free for the 7 month old baby.

Head up the coast to Santa Barbara. There are some beautiful trails up there. You could go to the botanical garden and hike, the zoo in SB is great, lots of great restaurants on the pier, take your bikes or rent them to ride along the beach.
Have fun! It's been beautiful weather here :)
