I had the same problem for years before I talked to my doctor about it. I was scared of taking sleeping pills because I did nto want to become dependent on them. I told her that and she gave me this great safe for long term use sleeping aid called Trazadone. I was orignally marketed for patients with mental disorders to calm them down but it works great as a sleeping aid. The best part about it is that I got off of it about 4 months ago and did not have any side effects. Good luck, I know that not sleeping will drive you crazy so talk to your doctor and see what he/she has to say about trying out a sleeping aid. I will warn you about taking Melatonin. Becasue it is a chemical that your body produces, if you take it for extended periods of time, your body will acually stop producing it on its own and you will have a hell of a time getting to sleep with out it. My mom was giving it to my brother in high school because she did not know that there was anything wrong with taking it nightly and he ended up getting hooked on it. His doctor told him after he was taking it for awhile that it should not be taken on a long-term basis, only every once in awhile.

Try reading before bed. Also, you might want to try a bit of exercise right before jumping in the sack. A brisk walk, etc. If all else fails, what works for me, and as corny as it sounds, I keep a pen and notepad next to the bed. I usually don't sleep because I can't "shut my head off" at night. So, I write down the most pressing things on my mind as I'm trying to go to sleep, and that usually works. Because then I know it's written down, and I can work on it the next morning.

Hope that helps, and you can get some rest.

God Bless.

Establish a regular bedtime and stick to it
Avoid caffeine, (coffee, pop, energy drinks)
Don't sleep in on the weekends (messes up your sleep cycle)
Take a warm bath before bedtime
Exercise regularly, but not close to bedtime
Read something boring in a dimly lit room (works for me)

Above all, see a doctor if sleep loss is affecting your everyday life, it might be due to medications or an underlying medical problem.

Turn off the TV a half hour before you go to bed.

Try a warm - not hot - bath before going to bed.

If you are drinking age have a small drink.

Go for a long walk before you head for bed.

Play soft music on a player with a timer.

Do some meditation before bedtime.

Get ready for bed. Sit quietly in a chair until you feel drowsy.

If you think you can you will. And if you think you can not so shall you.

Read about this and more. It's free.

Some ideas:

1. No caffeine after maybe 2pm. No coffee, cola, or chocolate after that time.

2. If that doesn't solve your problem, you could try taking 2 melatonin tablets right before you go to bed. You can find them at any vitamin shop or drugstore. Melatonin is a hormone your body produces at bedtime. For me, it's very effective at resetting my biological clock to deal with jet lag, and I often take it to help me fall asleep. My MD told me it's just fine to take. If nothing else, you might want to try it while you investigate other approaches.

3. There's some info on the Ambien website listing all the things you should do to help yourself be sleepy at bedtime. I'm not recommending Ambien (it stopped working for me after a few weeks, I doubled my dose, got hooked on it, etc etc), but all the sleepytime advice on the site makes sense.

Good luck!

Since you appear to be young, i would say that the best thing for you is to increase your daily exercise, unless you already get 30-45 minutes of cardio 2 or 3 times a week. I used to have trouble sleeping, but i started weightlifting and it makes me feel great, i have no trouble sleeping now and i'm healthier. This is the one thing that's good for your body, mind and soul if done correctly.

Try to make it cooler in your sleeping room before you go to bed. Try reading a book and take a warm bath before going to bed and drink some milk right before you go to sleep.
If that doesn't work. Jog at least a few miles that day and then
do the above suggestions included.

What about sleeping pills? That always helps me or also taking Benadryl. Also... try getting up really early one day. That night you will be really tired before going to sleep.
