My husband bought me a really nice huge cast iron skillet. It came pre-seasoned from Lodge. But even despite out reseasoning, it keeps flaking, and today I've discovered it's rusted on the outside.

I don't get it. I've seasoned unseasoned cast iron before and they're great. I know to keep them dry, not use soap, etc.

So I guess, why did it rust, and how do I fix it?

I would scrub it with a good soapfree steel wool pad,you can also use salt as an abrasive, when done reseason either on the stove or in a very hot oven

It might be flaking if you used metal utensils in it. I don't use metal utensils in cast iron for that reason...even though it's seasoned it can still scratch it and rust. When you clean your skillet and dry it do you also place a coating of oil on it when storing it? After cleaning/drying your skillet you need to coat the entire inside and outside with a thin coating of oil which helps protect it from rust and keeps it seasoned. To save your skillet, scour off the rust and you will have to start the seasoning process over. Coat it with oil and sit in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Pour out the oil and place it back in the oven and continue heating it for a few hours. (You need to pour out the oil so it doesn't burn in the oven). Do this several times along with oiling it between uses and it should bring back the seasoning you had before.

OK, this is my theory..... I treat every piece of cast iron that I purchase as new. I clean it up with soap and hot water. To remove rust ( I agree with the above answer) wash and treat again and again until all the rust is gone. I have found it to be effective to wash and place on stove and heat. Swab (oil on paper towel) CAUTION: your cast iron will be extremely HOT!!!!! and place in oven at 250 for 1 hour. Turn off oven and let cool and place into your storage area.

It sounds like you know how to care for your cast iron so I suspect you got a faulty skillet. I recommend you complain to Lodge. They have a great reputation to protect so I would bet they will make it right for you.

Rub it with Olive Oil (preferably extra virgin) and let it sit overnight. It will be just fine.
