The general rule for puppies is to feed them all they will eat for about the first 8 months (longer for large breed dogs). Don't give them their food all at once though because some puppies will eat and eat and eat until they make themselves sick. Instead, feed them several meals each day. It can be hard to judge exactly how much to feed each time but, a general rule is to feed them all they can eat in 5 minutes time. If you feed them and they gobble it all down in just a minute or two, then increase how much you are feeding. If however, you feed them and after 5 minutes there is still food in the bowl, decrease the amount you are feeding. Do this 4 or 5 times per day while the puppy is young, and slowly (over several months time) work down to only 2 or 3 feedings per day.

How much the puppy will eat in that time will increase as she gets older, so it's a good idea to watch her while she eats. Doing so will make it much easier to determine whether she is eating the right amount.

It is also important to choose a high quality food. The puppy might eat tons of a cheap food, but never get the right amount of nutrients. The better the food quality, the healthier she will be.

I am horrified that your cousin bought a Lab and was not given food or instructions. It is the duty of a breeder to consider the welfare of their pups long after they have left home. A 7 week old lab should be fed 4 times a day on a reputable food formulated for puppies, approx 150 grams of dried fod per feed. This is neccessary for growth and development. I breed Labradors and my pus leave with a puppy pack of food, vouchers for more food and full instructions on their feeding programme. If feeding is substandard at this critical stage in a puppies life there could be serious development reporcussions. If in any doubt speak to your vet and report this breeder to The kennel Club.

Almost all of your cousin's pups growth occurs in the 1st ten months. It's important to feed it a puppy formula food. Puppy formulas have a high fat content and higher protien.
I have bred many dogs and have always fed pups all that they can eat.
You should also feed her several times a day. One larger meal a day means that once that pups stomach is full, that's it. Her stomach only holds an ounce of food and it won't last.
If she goes to dried dog food later on, check to make sure that the first ingredient on the package says, "meat or meat and bone meal".
Keep feeding all she can eat. If some years down the road she starts looking heavy, cut back and excercise her.

I have a 2 y.o. black lab girl and I put food in her bowl every morning, and by the next morning it's gone. She is not a pig and will eat what she wants at a time. If your puppy is a pig and eats too much at a time, then you have to ration it.

read the back of the puppy chows bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Follow the directions. It amazes me the amount of people who do not use common sense when it comes to being a responsible pet owner!

Wow. Another person buys a living thing and doesn't know anything about it.

Ask the vet he/she will recommend a feeding schedule.

Get it a large breed puppy formula food. Consult a vet on the brand of food they recommend to give them and the amount.
