Anything Toyota that you can afford.
Anything Honda that you can afford.
Anything GM with a V6 (except the 3.4 DOHC) or 4-cyl
Avoid Ford, Mazda, Chrysler, and Dodge.
Take the oil cap off and run your finger along the inside of it. If you get smooth oil or nothing then you're good. If you get grit and bumps then that car has not been maintained very well.
Sit in the car with it running and turn the wheel back and forth, all the way to one side, all the way to the other. Then center it and go back and forth rapidly. If you hear ANY clunks or pops then the steering rack needs work.
Make sure to floor it at random times when test driving it to force the transmission to downshift. A quick rev before shifting is fine, but anything past that and there's a problem with the transmission.

You should really look for a "granny car" They are not beat on like a civic or corolla and many of them get 30 MPG. Something like a Buick or an oldsmobile or a ford taurus. Plus these cars will protect you in a crash better than a small tinny economy car. I know they are not cool but they provide reliable transportation for a teen driver.

the compact japanese sedan is always a good choice. Reliable, good on gas, easy to drive, easy to park. If you can drive a stick shift, maintenence is next to nothing on them. A Mazda Protege, Honda Civic, Toyota Corrola, or Nissan Sentra would be a good choice. For someone your age, I suggest taking a look at the mazda because it is a bit more fun than the others.

Get something that you like. Try to find a low mileage car that hasn't been beaten to death. Find something that is easy on gas, and is not a hot rod. Just starting out, you want something simple and not too fancy. good luck.
