i would leave it there and ask the child if they fed the turtle today and let the child find it. and explain to them thats what happens if you dont take care of your pets. this will be a good responsibililty lesson for he child b/c every child needs responsibilities if you dont let the child make their own mistakes they will never learn from them.

Well if you knew he wasn't caring for it properly the turtle should of been taken away as punishment and released or given away. It shouldn't of came to the point where it died hungry and thirsty.

As for telling him id be like wheres your turtle? will you go check on him? make sure hes not hungry or thirsty... then wait and watch he will prolly get upset but that's what happens when you don't care for a helpless animal its best to Learn from his mistake now so it doesn't repeat anymore..

I'm sorry for the pets loss and hope all goes well.... just be supportive he may of been the cause of death but he will be hurt and what is done is done so the death of his pet is enough punishment i believe.

Also do not replace a pet till he learns to care properly for them:)

i agree with the lady that said hes still too young to take FULL responsibility for any animal when i was his age my mom and dad helped me care for my pet till i knew exactly what to do and how to care for it properly.

You are just as irresponsible as your child, you knowingly left a pet in care of some one you knew was irresponsible. You must not have checked the turtle for at least 4 days. If you wait for the kid to find it, it could be weeks, months....years! March his little fanny right now and let him know he and you are responsible. And for Gods sake, next time get him a pet rock. Because this was a turtle, you yourself didnt take the time to care for it, but had it been a puppy, it would have been a different story. We teach our children by example and you werent a very good one. What you should have done was at the first signs of negligence, tell your kid that the depended on him for everything and since he was unwilling to take care of his turtle that you are giving the turtle to some one that will give it proper care.

Using an animal to teach your child responsibility is wrong, wrong, wrong and your way of teaching your son a lesson seems rather twisted. Dump the dead turtle, forbid your son from having pets and perhaps take some parenting classes.

Put the turtle back in his tank and mention that he hasn't moved in a while and suggest he checks up on it. He'll learn his lesson to take care of his responsabilities.

Don't make him take the blame for the turtles death. He is still too young to be responsible for a pet.

Do you think we should blame you since you allowed a child to have a pet?

These things just happen especially with turtles.

i'm sure some will call it harsh...but i think its tough love and i applaud it. this is a behavior that you *should* want to address...i'm just sorry the poor turtle was allowed to die to make a point. maybe this will be the last pet for junior?

i would be honest with him but i certainly wouldn't blame him. he's 7 years old--he shouldn't be held accountable for caring for a pet. he's not mature enough. Tell him you think the turtle got sick. By the way, where were you when the turtle needed to be fed?

Maybe the point will be well taken. Everyone handles things differently. Once handled I would never bring it up again.

tell him: "______ died because you wouldn't take care of him/her. You may not have another pet until you're older, and more able to take on responsibilities." or something along those lines.
