Braces hurt right after application and right after tightening because the roots of the teeth have to be "broken loose" in order for the teeth to shift. This is a very special kind of pain! Usually they hurt badly for no more than 24 hours, until they get tightened again.

Naproxen sodium (Aleve) helped my braces pain. I would take 440 mg 30 minutes before each tightening. Yes, it still hurt, but not as badly. I was in my 40s and had the braces for 2 years. I also had six gingival (gum) surgeries. I lost a total of 30 pounds. This is called "The Braces Diet".

I see other posters have recommended whisky, ice packs, and Oralgel. Whether you try these is up to you. As the pain is originating at the roots of your teeth, such topical treatments may not work as well.

buy
1] anbesol - rub on gums as directed
2] orajel - rub on gums as directed
Take
a] advil 200 mg. every 6 hours, and tylenol 500 every 6 hours,
halfway between advil doses.
Example:
advil at 6 AM, 12 noon, 6 PM, and 12 midnight;
tylenol at 9 AM, 3 PM, 9 PM, 3 AM
3] use ice in plastic bag, wrapped in dishtowel to jaw[s]
The first time they are put on, and tightened, is the worst - may hurt several days.
Other times, only 1 - 2 days of pain.
Make sure you have mom or dad put some in school clinic for you after school starts, before you need it!

No, Aspirin is not good for kids or teenagers. With the amount of Tylenol and Advil you are taking, your stomach probably can't handle the aspirin too. If it hurts that bad, talk to your parents and have them contact your orthodontist.

Take aleve, it is more stronger and will help better. Also u can use an icepack to numb the pain. That is about it. At first braces really hurt, but you will get used to it. Try and eat soft foods to avoid irritation, like soup and yogurt. I hate to give you bad news, but it usually hurts everytime you get the wire changed also, so be prepared. good luck

well, i dont have braces but when my teeth were shifting, my mom told mii to take some whiskey and swivel it around in my mouth, kinda like mouth wash. it will numb the pain away for awhile, long enough so u can sleep at night. depending on how bad the pain is, it should last AT LEAST 20-30 minutes. trust mii, that REALLY helped alot!
