The senior Republican on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee is trying to breath new life into immigration reform.

Sen. Arlen Spector, R-Pa., says he is close to presenting a new legislative reform package designed to win over senators who voted down last spring's compromise measure, The Hill reported Friday.

Spector says his bill omits "Z-visas," a main sticking point in the failed legislation that conservatives viewed as granting blanket amnesty to illegals.

The nation's 12 million illegal immigrants would no longer be considered fugitives of justice, which would be the only change in their status, Spector said.

Spector said he is meeting with groups from both sides of the immigration debate.

"I'm ready to unveil it now," Spector said of his new bill. "I've got letters to the 100 senators on my desk."

What do you think? Do you know about this?

There were many parts to the amnesty that I objectified to. Even by their own numbers if it was passed even without the Z vista's if would only deduce new illegal immigration by 25%, and the cost was off the charts, so the chances are not good. When in the heck is he going to unveil it, we do not need anymore hype. I read some more and once again he doesnt understand that we the citizens wants what best for us and if it helps the illigals so be it, but making sure they are no longer fugitives from justice is not our main concern.

I met Spector once. I actually think he's a decent person compared to other politicians. He might have misplaced beliefs though. I was told he's sick and on his way out and trying to build a legacy for himself. I'm suprised by his position in immigration and why he's so interested. Then again as you know, I'm a Californian, and I don't watching him as much as the Pennsylvanians that details their disdain for him. I just based this on a brief meeting and a few news articles I've been watching on a different subject matter.

All these bills floating around is getting me confused. In the Times, the Senate passed a bill for 3 billion in funding for border security, and for some reason Bush plans to veto it. I try to read about why he would veto it and it doesn't make sense.

On your previous question, The LA times business section today stated that California and rest of the US is making record growth exporting Farm products to CHina. I guess Chinese don't trust their domestic foods anymore. THe thing is I keep reading that California needs to import labor or they would go belly up. I don't see our farms closing up. I don't see why we need to give farm subsidies to help our farmers and need a new bill to import cheaper labor.

It sounds like Spector is a bit dotty. Been here done that and it failed. Some people never learn that Americans are wise to the government now!

I am a PA resident. If Senator Specter is writing new immigration reform, it does not surprise me. It disappoints me greatly. I think his trolley has jumped the track. All parts of the previous bill were bad. Americans from all across the country have said we want secure borders and want to stop illegal immigration. It seems like the liberal in Mr. Specter wants to take care of the illegals already here. He just does not get it.

I am also from Pa and am ashamed to admit that I voted for him every time he was up for election. I have since emailed him several times letting him know my beliefs as well as telling him he will never receive my vote again. He emailed me back and basically told me he didn't give a crap what I had to say.
From the little that was stated in the article,it sounds like more of the same BS as before. I want to know what his full agenda is,although I'm sure I already know.

Since Spector is My senator, I have NO FAITH in him to do the right thing for our country or for our state.

Sorry, "senator", but they are still here illegally, that makes them fugitives.

And I voted for this idiot last time. Never again!!

So what does that mean?No z-visa but a change in status...is he saying they'll become citizens or what?

Dar is there anywhere to see what the heck he's talking about?I'd heard they were bringing something up that was more lenient I hope I'm wrong in what I'm assuming here.

Oh I get it - trash the Z visa because most didn't want a blanket amnesty - and just declare them legal instead!!! Politicians and the public are too stupid to see the contrasts!!

A pile of light crap and a pile of dark crap is still...crap. I stay clear of both what you call it makes no difference to me.
