I guess that salesman is too busy to make a sale, then. Is this the only Toyota dealer in your area? If not, I'd call the sales manager and tell him/her why you are taking your business to another dealer. If so, contatct the manager and let him/her know that this salesman has been jerking you around and you want to deal with a salesperson who actually values your business.

It sounds to me like you are dealing with a sales person who has probably been at this dealership for a long time, built a client base and probably is selling 30+ cars per month. These types of sales people are rare, but they typically do require that you make an appointment so they can adequately help everyone who is interested in buying a car. For him to have asked if you were buying the car suggests that he was trying to determine how serious of a buyer you are because it takes time to sell a car to someone in the decision making mode. The only thing I think he probably should have done in this case is ask for help from a fellow salesperson. It sounds like he may be too greedy, or it could be that this dealer does not have a team player mentality.
If you are that dissatisfied, talk to his manager, and take your business elsewhere. At this point, it sounds like you would not be happy with the deal or the highlander if you continued working with this salesperson.

I'm not excusing his behavior but toyota dealers do have the luxury of people waiting in line to buy. I have a freind at a toyota store and if a buyer so much as hints that they want a discount, they tell them goodbye and go on to the next customer.
toyota is for the most part highly overrated, and especially the highlander, this may be a blessing in disguise.

Thats happened to me plenty of times. I wanted to test drive this Nissan Skyline in Japan one time and some ****** kept telling me. No sorry, not yet. For weeks and weeks. Than finally I asked another salesman at the same place and he was okay with it. That also happened when I wanted to test drive this Subaru WRX STi (I bought it) and the man never let me test drive it but after a week of not letting me test drive he asked me continously if I wanted to purchase it. Finally I asked for his Manager we straightened things up, I test drove it and ended up buying it.

There's a difference between being jerked around and discriminated against. What is he doing that is discriminatory? The only thing I know about you is that you and your husband are young.

call and tell him that you don't feel he treated you with coutesy and professionalism and never go there again. There's always another dealership nearby and honestly your money could be better spent than on a highlander.
