I want to get a pretty back tattoo on my lower back but I want to know what I can take so that I don't feel to much pain when they are coloring it in.... Which is a lot of coloring. Thanks for the help.

You cant take anything because the medicine in your system will thin your blood and cause more bleeding. What you can do is try to relax before you get the tattoo. Get a nice massage (no oils or lotions involved at all).

The pain from a tattoo is more hype than reality. The area gets numb about 10-15 min after the tattooist begins. This is the experience I had with both of mine. Once you get past the first 10 min then you are good to go!

First of all, no do NOT get drunk. That's idiotic, a good artist won't do it if they think you're under some influence of alcohol/drugs. It does thin the blood, as mentioned before, and you will bleed out more. Topical anesthetics and such work a bit but I don't recommend them, a lot of places won't let you use them, and they are definitely not used (or last) through the whole thing, but I don't use any of that. I believe the pain is the part of the process, and you need to earn it. I control my breathing, my mind, and my body with meditation, I find it personally soothing while under the needle. There a plenty of ways to endure a tattoo, I just say face it like a man (figuratively speaking),don't be tense, and just stay calm and you will be just fine.

Everybody's a little different. I have 2 tattoos on my lower back (I got a hibiscus flower when i turned 18 and then got 2 more added to it when i was 22). The first one hurt because i didn't know what to expect, but when i got the other two added, it didn't bother me as much. My boyfriend was there talking to me and we were watching TV at the same time so I had distractions to keep me from focusing on my back. I actually started to fall asleep because i thought the shading felt good!

The ones on my shoulder blades (two fu-dogs, the tails come up onto the top of my shoulder) hurt quite a bit. But like all tattoos, the pain goes away as soon as the needle leaves your skin.

I say take a friend or something to do to distract you from the tattoo'ing, and take a break now and then.

Definitely don't take any pharmaceuticals. Aspirin, whatever, as mentioned will make bleeding more of an issue. What's worked for most people is to have a normal sized meal about an hour beforehand, get enough sleep the night before, bring a chatty friend to keep you pre-occupied & concentrate on your breathing throughout.

Between that & the endorphin release some 10 minutes or so into the session, you'll almost certainly be fine. 100% woman is correct - although it does hurt, the pain is more hype than reality.

As far as pain everybodys pain threshold is different. In my opinion according to your post your worried about the coloring part? The coloring or shading isn't nothing in pain compared to the outlining. All my Tattoos were OK pain wise. But The outlining is quit irritating.

Do not take pills, do not drink alcohol, do not do anything that will interfere with the surface of your skin (like rub lidocaine on).

Have a good meal an hour or so beforehand (the place I go to asks if you've eaten within the past four hours). If you must take something, have a breath mint, as mint calms you.

you can spray some solorcaine on the area aout 30 minutes before you get the tattoo. it contains lidocaine. you can slso use benzocaine. they all have numbing medication in them. it won't get rid of all the pain, but it will numb it some...

Just don't take aspirin, because it thins out your blood.
