I love doing push ups.
I can do 50 in a row. I started small, and like you, i could just manage 20 in one go. (Im 16)
If you ever feel sore, AT ALL, stop. Take a break, and dont do press ups for that day. Of course it will be hard lifting yourself up but you will know if its normal exercise pain, or just real pain. Never do pressups when your sore.
Oh and lastly, the proper way to do press ups is to have your arms going down, and just more than shoulder width apart, and put your hands flat on the gorund with fingers facing forward. The only things touching the ground at any time should be your Toes and the palms of your hands.
Have fun, stay safe. Dont hurt yourself.

To me.. push ups aren't hard really.. I mean I weigh 10 lb less than u but that's not much of a difference I think. But no u should keep goin cus u'll get to do more and more and with the time it gets easier from my experiance... cus I used to start off with 20 each set.. after about month and a half I got to the point where I did 70 in 1 set... non stop. and if I did it then u can too. And I'm 6'3 tall.. which means I have long *** arms.. so the distance I'm pushin is long between my chest and the floor when goin up and down.

You'll get used to it. Just keep plugging away. Push-ups are a great workout for your whole body - you use your legs, abs, back, shoulders, and arms (of course).
There really is not a short cut that I can tell you that will help. Even if you lift weights, doing push-ups is SO different that it might not help all that much. My friend once suggested that I make the push-ups "harder" for a set and then do one the normal way. You can tell the difference.
Personally, when I first started, I did push-ups on one foot in an attempt to become efficient at them in a short amount of time. I did 3 sets of 25 5 days per week and now, I cannot do a "normal" push-up b/c it just doesn't feel right. It worked for me. You can try to do them on an incline (put your feet on a chair on a stability ball), you can do them on one foot, at the top of the push-up you can lift one hand at a time and alternate (this works best w/ a partner if they are doing push-ups as well. you slap the person's opposite hand).
You'll start to see results soon and it'll get easier. Just be patient! :-)

Now that you've just begun doing them, you should take a day off every 3 days of doing pushups. The body needs regular rest to grow, otherwise it'll be worse than not doing anything at all. Eventually, when you become good at them you should still take 1 day a week where the most physical exercise you do is take a walk.

The more you do and the more often you do them, the easier they will become, like anything having to to do with progressive exercise resistance. Once regular pushups become too easy (which they will eventually) begin doing close grip pushups, placing your hands together so that your index fingers and thumbs just barely touch and lower yourselfdown onto your hands squarely in the middle of your chest. This is a fantastic Triceps builder!

i could not do even 2 pushups when i was 15.
i slowly started doing bench presses about 60 pounds.
i did not go to a gym, so i put heavy stuff and a few dumbells in a luggage bag and benched it on the bed.
i developed them so quick, like in a week or something.
get someone to spot u while u bench press.
i developed triceps and then was slowly able to do 15 easy.
im 23 now, don't exercise often.
i can bench 115 and do 40 pushups.

I think you'd get used to it but give yourself a break, like a day break or something.
If you wanna pump up muscle do your exercises, take a day break, then do again. That's the way muscle grows. It needs time.
For me pushups have never really been hard but I think right now they are lol even though I have stronger arms then a typical girl.

You'll get used to it. You're 'waking up" the muscle thats there and building on it. If your arm still hurts after a week or two get it checked out.
