Check the obvious things first, such as:
1. Air Filter. A clean air filter can increase mile and power signficantly.
2. Check Tire Pressure. Low tire pressure can cause a significant loss in mileage.
3. Are you driving with the A/C turned on all the time? Moderate your A/C usage.
4. Reduce weight inside the vehicle by removing anything that is excess weight out of the trunk.
5. If you have excessive brake dust, you may want to have the brakes inspected again. You may have a sticking caliper that could cause you to use more gasoline than necessary.

RE:
Whats wrong with my 2006 Dodge Charger SXT? It gets 12.5 MPG!?! It says its supposed to get 17!!?
I just bought a used 2006 Dodge Charger SXT (6 Cylinder) from someone. It has 20,000 miles on it and I made sure the person that sold it to me brought it to a Dodge dealer to be inspected for any flaws. The only thing they said was minor break dust which they fixed. I love everything about this car...

This is EXTREMELY typical with the "Performance" Dodge and Chryslers. Take the 300C(V8 Hemi) for example. If you research Consumer Reports you will find on that car that the average observed City MPG was 10 MPG when the EPA states 17MPG in the City. There seems to be a disconnect between the EPA and reality. What a surprise! On the Dodge Charger here is what Comsumer Reports actually OBSERVED on the Dodge Charger V6 SRT:
CR's city/highway, mpg 12 / 28
And here is the EPA estimate:
EPA city, mpg 19
EPA highway, mpg 27
Go figure! No help here on WHAT you can do, but I have seen significant differences between EPA and Reality in all Dodge and Chrysler Performance Models.

maybe your gas cap isnt sealing good. do you have a check engine light? have to remember the epa stuff is an estimate and not fact. they are just saying that it might get 17. but they dotn promise that it will. like with my 03 dakota 4.7 they say it should get 15 city and 24 hwy. well I get about 16 to 17 city and 21 hwy. only one time I got 24
also I would change the oil as someone might have put thicker than precribed oil in the engine. so go with what dodge recomend and see if this helps any too. thicker oil weight will cause poorer MPG.

The octane on your gas can play into this as well. For some of the higher performing cars, 89 octane minimum to achieve advertised economy.
It also requires not using more than 1/2 of the gas pedal, ie, when you accellerate, do so at an even steady rate, not floored.
If you modified the drive-train some, ie, tires that are differnt height than original, it can effect mileage as well.
If you bought this from a dealer, contact their service dept to find out what else you could try to improve mileage.

The problem is that you bought a 6 cylinder sports car. Why? The gas mileage is probably your driving style. My friend bought a brand new Charger SRT and he gets 15 in the city.

- Start coasting more downhill
- Avoid braking...wastes energy
- Sort of stupid for a sports car, but lay off the gas pedal.
- Remove weight. If you're driving city I would only keep half a tank of gas. Each gallon weighs about 6 pounds.

i would check the plugs in it to make sure their good, and have the proper gap in them, also check the air filter,it may have not ever been changed before, but also have a computer scan done on it,to see if it reveals anything wrong with it,that car should get a lot better than that ,also lighten up on the gas pedal those engines aren't meant to be fast just reliable, good luck with it.
