My partner & I split time between Harrisburg and Northern NJ. When we travel together we usually flight out of Newark. After our most recent experience we are looking for good alternate airports. So I am seeking recommendations.
Has anyone used any of the following, which I know are options for us: Allentown or Harrisburg in PA, Trenton or Atlantic City in NJ? Any others that would be good alternates that I am not aware of?
We would be travelling within the US only. Mostly to either Tampa or Ft. Myers in Florida (family reasons). We are willing to take stops if it makes the flights better and the airport experience less hectic.

You could also try Philadelphia - yes it's big but not nearly as bad as Newark. Of the airports you mentioned the only one I've been into is Allentown. There's also a tiny airport in Lancaster, PA - that's the only other one I can think of that's not in western PA. Driving down to Baltimore (BWI) might be an option from Harrisburg as well - again it's pretty big, but better than Newark. Might also be cheaper since a couple of the low-fare airlines fly out of there.

Also, with any of the "alternate" airports you mentioned, you will almost definitely have to connect through a larger airport, which will probably not make the airport experience any less hectic in the long run (not to mention it will take longer overall, you risk missing your connecting flight which will add to the hassle, and since there are very limited flights out of most of these airports, it could cost you a lot more as well). So it might not be worth it in the long run - I know big airports suck, and parking at a small airport is probably easier if you're leaving your car there, but small airports have disadvantages too. Sorry to ramble I just fly a lot.

There might be puddle jumper service between Harrisburg and Morristown Airport. Morristown takes small business type jets and general aviation aircraft.
