There is a newer version of the drop ceiling that is very easy to do alone. I did my basement in a single (long) day, all by myself. The tracks are attached directly to the ceiling joists. I can't remember the name, I'll try to find it for you though.

the suspended ceiling system is composed of two major components:

the actual lighweight tile (usually 2' x 4' or 2' x 2') and a metal T-bar system onto which the tiles are suspended.

The T-bar system can be directly attached to the underside of the structure or if the structure is higher than 7' or 8', the T-bar system is hung at each corner with 9 gauge wire at the desired elevation.

first install stips they lay in tiles. Materials, tools, and a self help booklet available from Home Depot or Lowe's

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot. They have occasional classes on installation or will schedule on for you.
