Basically I need a bit of encouragement, I'm of alcohol 5wks now after 10 years of weekend binging, Weekends are getting really difficult instead of getting easier they seem to be getting harder, Is this normal?? Its not a social thing a i drink at home, I dont go out to pubs etc


I wasn't an alcoholic or anything, just had 8 cans or so over the course of a weekend so hardly an alcoholic but my doctor recommended I give it up.

So I suppose I need some wise words of encouragement to help me beat this craving

it's probably more psychological than physical; i mean, drinking at home has become your way of life... it's not that your body needs it, or that you must drink to survive. try to find something to do on the weekends. anything! even drinking at a pub with a friend is better than sulking at home..

It is normal for your weekends to get harder. I have been in drug/alcohol treatment twice. If you were a casual drinker who was at home when you drank then you need to get away from your "triggers". Get out of the house on the weekends and have some fun with someone you care about. See a movie. One thing that will help you a lot is to get away from people, places, and times that have to do with your past drinking habbits. Over time it will become easier but right now it will get a bit harder. It is something that can be overcome. Just have faith in yourself and put yourself around people that support and believe in you.

you could always try working out or going on a run to take your mind off of the craving, just remember you have to have will power otherwise you will just backdown and go ahead and drink, because it sounds good now, so when you think to pick up a beer, think of the longterm and how much you really dont want to drink, even if thats what sounds good at that particular moment. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor.

I'd find new hobbies, get involved in the community and church, and try to do everything to get your mind off of alcohol. Get involved with AA, even tough you are not and alcoholic. There are plenty of people who will be willing to help you on the weekends if you just ask for it. Good luck

Good for you, your making yourself healthier, and setting a good example to people around you! Stay busy doing things that make it hard to drink, keep plenty of non-alcoholic drinks around so it is easy to drink them when you get thirsty, ask your friends to help you by not drinking around you. You will be amazed at how much fun being alcohol free can be, and to top it off, you will remember how much fun you had.

I think you are slightly alcohol dependant, so the distraction game is what you need, because if you are doing something else you will forget the booze. Walks Bike Rides gardening (poor you) are distractions. Reading books and watching telly just emphasise you wanting the ale

Alcoholism is not judged by quantity, but frequency. Try therapy and/or AA might help you out.

The way you make it sound, you sound like you are addicted. You dont have to give it up cold turkey, (unless your liver is dead, then by all means quit) just have discipline and dont go over board.

It's actually pretty simple. Craving=alcoholic.

I'd try AA. It worked for me, I haven't touched a drop in almost 9 years.

When you stop drinking, you increase your physical ability. Try to take up a sport or a hobby like hiking, rock climbing, or running.
