Kay I just thought that since I just had a guinea pig die of liver failure I should warn others that dont know this. Do NOT use pine shavings for ANY rodent!! The pine has a special chemical in it that makes the rodent waste smell less and this is what causes liver failure in rodents. I have found a new bedding from Care Fresh. It does come in a smaller bag and is alot more expensive, but If you want to have your small furry friend for a full happy life, you may want to consider what you've just read.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your little one. I don't know why pet shops continue to sell pine or cedar-- both are really unhealthy for small animals & it really doesn't seem fair that it isn't just taken off the market.
We actually get the largest bags we can find of Carefresh, Soft-sorbent & similar beddings (usually whichever happens to be on sale). This way, it's not really expensive in the long run & certainly worth the protection & comfort it gives our little guys.

I agree with Memphis Gal. Aspen works great, very aborsobent and very comfy!! Some beddings like Carefresh tend to be more dusty than others. I am looking into Fleece at the moment, it is more expensive to buy but is cheaper in the long run. Each day will involve me shaking out the poops, and each week I will have to wash the fleece but other than that it is very abosorbent, does not smell, and the positives go on. Sorry about your loss, it's a pity that their is not very many cavvy savvy vets and good information out their to help people and piggys like you.

if you google rodent bedding, it will tell you not to use pine or cedar shavings.

kiln dried pine shavings are fine, though as the special drying process gets rid of the chemicals that mess with their respiratory system.

Aspen shavings are safe, as are Kiln dried pine. Regular pine shavings and cedar shavings are not safe at all. I find that Carefresh is very dusty and causes breathing probles for one of my pigs. So, it's all about what is safe and what works for your pig.

i agree, care fresh is great. i have a rabbit and a chichilla in it, theyve both lived for a long time! we have to get that big, 3X3 bag, since they need a bigger space.

i'm sorry to hear about your GP, however if you had of done your research on small animals you would have known this before hand. i know this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but i'm sick of seeing questions after the fact. too many people buy a animal without research and animals usually suffer because of it.
