Actually it's not that easy to just go back home and apply. If caught at the border entering OR leaving they will be detained and flagged to not receive a visa for 10 years.Did you know that?

Yes, anyone who knows the process involved would know that this is true. Many however do not know this to be a fact. Even if you had a visitors visa and had everything in order you can still be obtained at your destination and deported back, and put on the list to have to wait years before you can try again. This happened to my brother in law, he made it all the way to the Atlanta airport with Visa and money in hand, and they put him on next flight back to Guanajuato.

There shouldn't be a process to change illegality to legality.
When one makes a choice to break the law, one must also accept the consequences. Historically, the US has been far too lenient and forgiving of those who violate our immigration laws, granting amnesty leading more to come in expectation of also receiving amnesty.
The right choice is to stay out or apply and enter legally. If one does not qualify for legal immigration, that is not the problem of the US but the problem of the individual. We cannot continue to survive as a nation when millions of others view our nation as their breadbasket and disdain our laws.

Since over half of illegals originate from Mexico, I will address those. Have you ever crossed the border into Mexico? It's as easy as getting in your car and simply driving over the border at any auto mobile port of entry. Any illegal with Mexican citizenship can easily buy a plane ticket and fly into Mexico as well. Mexico will never deny them entry. What you're talking about, you know being stopped by immigration and detained only happens with people and passengers entering the US not leaving. It would be very easy for any illegal to go home with the money they've made here and apply for legal entry from Mexico. If they have been caught by immigration then that's a different story, but we all know that most come in undetected. I don't think you've traveled much out of the country.
Added: If you are a Mexican National, all you need to gain entry back to Mexico is your Mexican voter registration card or a matricula consular (an ID given by the Mexican consulate in the US). You are not required to possess a Mexican passport by Mexico. Just admit it, you're wrong. My parents own a travel agency and I worked for them many summers and still to this day help them out whenever I'm around. Call Mexicana de Aviacion (a Mexican airline) and ask if you don't believe me.
Mexican Citizens traveling from the United States to Mexico one-way only may present one of the following:
Passport (may be expired)
Matricula Consular
Voter's Registration Card (Credencial Federal de Elector)
Certificate of Baptism and a photo ID
Original or Certified copy of a Mexican birth certificate and a photo ID
Certificate of Nationality issued by the Mexican Consulate
Mexican military ID (Cartilla Militar)

If they come across illegally, and knowingly one can't apply to be here legally, then why are they here.
I think that it is quite possible that most do not intend on becoming legal, and that's why they cross. Whether or not they get caught for doing so, stills calls for deportation on that basis alone.

Did you ever stop to think that the reason Americans are so outraged by illegal immigration is because it is just that - illegal?
Have you considered that the difference between immigrants of the past and many of the current illegals is that in the past, people came to this country because they WANTED TO BE AMERICANS? They didn't come here, demand health care and welfare and expect the people in this country to conform to their culture. They came to the U.S looking for a better life, a chance at the "American Dream" and had a desire for citizenship. Citizenship used to mean something in this country, not just to immigrants but to natural born Americans. People use to be proud to be American and were thankful for their freedoms and worked hard to earn their money. Now, people want to be "global" and expect things to be handed to them including their money. It's sick.
I also love the fact that you are taking the time to try to poke holes in people's answers except for those who are telling you that your entire question is full of incorrect information. You should consider a career in politics.

Well actually there is. They can apply for political asylum. Not likely to get it unless its a real clear situation of it, but that that particular case they can be converted to legal but thats it.

i do know that- i would assume that the criminal trespassers would have put some consideration into that very consequence when they entered this country illegally to start with.
Did they think they were going to live here illegally using falsified documents their whole life?
Did they think some fairy godmother was going to swoop down and give them a visa?
Or were they aware at the time they committed their crime that it was indeed a crime and that they would have to commit several other crimes just to remain in the country?
HMMMM- Wonder why anyone would ever want someone that makes choices like that to be forcibly removed and sent to their respective foreign home lands.?

Yes I know but more importantly the illegals are aware of this as well before they cross. The solution to that problem would be for them to take the time and enter legally.
