Top reasons for a cat to stop using the litter box:
Dirty litter box(es)
Poor choice of litter type
Poor location of litter box(es)
Blocked from the box by a dominant feline housemate
Box size is too small
Too few boxes
Medical problem(s) This should always be a serious consideration. Many medical issues such as diabetes, cystitis and bladder stones can be avoided by feeding canned food not dry food. The increased water content and the decreased carbohydrate content of canned food are healthier for your cat than dry. (Please see my Feeding Your Cat and Feline Diabetes and Carbohydrates articles on this site.
Do:
Scoop the litter box twice daily.
Use clumping litter - except for kittens younger than 8 weeks of age.
Use unscented litter.
Keep the litter deep enough.
Use large litter boxes.
Have enough litter boxes available.
Have litter boxes placed in a quiet area.
Use a litter mat that is comfortable for your cat to walk on.
Seek veterinary attention if your cat stops using the litter box.
Do NOT:
Use litters that do not clump - except for kittens younger than 8 weeks of age.
Use pelleted (pine or newspaper) or crystal/white pearl litters.
Use scented litters or any deodorizers.
Use hooded litter boxes if your intent is to prevent odors from reaching your nose.
Use plastic 'grass' mats.
Punish your cat for not using the litter box.
Put a child in charge of litter box maintenance.

Here are some things you can try:
1. switch brands. Most cats like the clumping clay cat litter, but its not good of course if your cat likes chowing down on it.
2. Where is the box? If it is in a busy area, try moving it to a more secluded, quiet and private area, or putting a wall up around it, such as a cardboard wall so they feel like they have their own bathroom
3. as mentioned above, try putting the turds in the box every time and seeing if they get the hint
4. scoop EVERY day, maybe twice a day. Your cat may be picky.
5. give your cat more than one box if you dont already.
6. if none of these work, call a vet

I had the same problem with my cats. The vet told me to try getting more litter boxes in different rooms (She told me the general rule is one more cat box than the number of cats, i.e. I have 3 cats and 4 litter boxes). It really worked. I know it may seem like more work, but it's the same amount of poop and pee to scoop, but in different places :) Good Luck.

You didn't say if they poop next to the box without going in, if they poop while in the box but it goes over the side, or if they're pooping AWAY from the box.
Each one requires a different way of making the cat do the right thing, so we need more information.

What I suggest is buying one of those litter boxes that has a cover on it. Make sure that it's big enough for your cat and that you teach your cat to get used to it. My cat did the same thing and buying a new one worked. I hope this helps!

Have you tried taking the poop and putting it in the box?...They may get the idea then...Or some cat's don't like to poop where other ones do...Maybe get them their own litter boxes.

don't rub their nose in it whatever you do, it's a disturbing experiance for your cat. Just pick them up by the scruff of their necks if they're light enough and show them the poop and spank them, not abusivly but to where they get the idea. then show them the litter box and if you keep this up they will get the idea.

Cats can strengthen allergic reactions to ingredients in usual cat nutrients. obtainable indications incorporate licking the fur off the tummy, biting their very own palms and legs, kicking the delicate dermis around the ears and chin, and chin zits. in case you have self belief an hypersensitive reaction, you may get prescription nutrients to purpose of your vet - no longer plenty extra costly than the shop manufacturers. wait and notice with this, it takes a whilst for the cat's device to learn from the recent nutrients. If she's struggling extraordinarily, they might supply to supply her a steroid shot and he or she'll right this moment supply up itching for six-8 weeks. you additionally can try switching her dishes and nutrients packing containers from plastic to glass - some cats are delicate to plastic. and because you suggested vaccuming, i replaced into instructed my cat would desire to be allergic to airborne dirt and dirt mites. no longer an uncomplicated factor to rid your self of, yet with a transformation in weight loss application and the occasional steroid shot, you are able to return your cat to her friendly character.
