If the burka has any sort of sign value, it appears to be..men can't control themselves so women have to carry a wall around with them to protect their virtue.

Any woman who feels that men need to control themselves or feel that it is more desirable to wear her virtue in her heart and mind is viewed as immoral.

The burka seems to send the message to women that their body and personhood are shameful or insignificant. She is the property of someone else. If you look at societies in which the burka is required, you look at women who are truly helpless and not safe.

For western women who adopt this style of dress, I think its has more to do with wearing a costume or feeling part of a group.
