Depending on the size of your wedding, food and beverage can get really expensive. I noticed when I was searching for venues that this was mostly because the banquet managers jacked up the price as soon as they heard the word "wedding". Leave that part out when you first start talking about price. In fact, if possible, don't even talk to the catering or banquet departments. My reception was in a restaurant in a hotel. By working with the restaurant manager instead of the catering department of the hotel, I had a lot more flexibility on menu choices and was able to save a bunch of money. Of course, if ballrooms or banquet managers just don't mesh with your personalities, find a reception site that does. Have it in a community park with catering from your favorite restaurant, for example. You're going to find out that tradition = expensive.

Another way to save some cash is to hold the wedding on a non-traditional day. Officiants, photographers, DJs - they all charge their highest rates on Saturdays. October is a lighter wedding season, so that should make booking these people easier, but if it would be possible to have the event on a Sunday through Wednesday, you can conceivably save a lot of money. Of course, that does make it difficult for out-of-town guests.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of great ideas. You've got plenty of time to find the best deals out there. Have fun.

Make your own invitations
Decorate yourself
By a dress on sale
Forget the favors
Do simple centerpieces that don't involve fresh flowers unless you grow them in a pot.
Make it a small wedding less people = less $$ spent
Borrow as much as you can instead of renting
Get married in a place that you don't have to rent, a friends beautiful back yard, a mountain top meadow, or on the beach.
Elope
Serve finger food instead of a whole meal
Have a cash bar
Make your own food

Really the more you can do your self the more money you will save in the long run.

Listen carefully: Despite what ANYONE says. it is your and your to be spouse's special day. YOU TWO make ALL decisions, although you can listen to advice. Do NOT let yourselves be hoodwinked into anything you do not want.
Do NOT allow people to attend who you dislike, resent, hate, etc no matter WHO they are! No exceptions. Anyone giving you a hard time, tell them to stop immediately. If they do not stop, hand up the phone, leave where you are, if they are in your home, exit them out. If it keeps up and they threaten you, they must be uninvited. Arrest crashers at the party. Call the cops if they refuse to leave.

Have some nice music played live by an organ or violinist when walking down the aisle. Write your own vows with your to be spouse. It;s a nice touch.

Hire live musicians, not a DJ, because they over loud everything and kill the spirit.

Have a special dish prepared for you and your spouse if the food is only OK. Make the day very special.

Invite no one, including family you hate and despise.

LOL

Go to David's Bridal. If you are planning on using the traditional wedding gown. Let them know exactly what your budget is and they will work within that budget. You can take your gown home the day you try it on. They often have sales where they have gowns on sale for as little as $100.00. I will always encourage the use of REAL musician to provide music for the wedding. Go to a local college with a music department and hire some college kids to perform the wedding music.

Outdoor weddings are nice if you will be in a warm climate. I got married in October 1998 outside in my future father inlaws backyard overlooking a lake in Texas. I made my own bridal bouquet and corsages and boutineers (sp). Go to the dollar store and pick up bunches of flowers in your colors and then cut them apart. It's really simple and inexpensive. Go to a fabric store and buy some tulle and wrap candies in them for on the tables. Or buy some of the small decorative bottles of bubbles (again, i've seen them at the dollar store) and buy a package of address labels and print them from home "Thank you for celebrating out special day....." then put your names and wedding date on them. I've also seen this done with votive candle holders (which double as table decorations before guests take them home)

Check with the local parks, see what it costs to do the ceremony there, or find a friend who will let you have it in their backyard. Just serve cake, no food or appetizers. Have punch to drink, no alchohol. Only have one attendant each, or no attendants at all. Kepp it simple and small. Or you can always go to the JP and then have a small reception later. Good Luck!

For flowers, display large vases of lavender. Pretty and not too costly. Rent a dress, it's okay. Luncheon buffet, instead od dinner. Have it outside in somebody's back yard. Or elope. good luck
