I didn't want to hurt the person's feelings by giving the gift back to them but it is something that is of no use to me or anyone I know and I would have much more use for money. The gift is brand new, was purchased in a large retail store which I know, it's still in its package - would it be possible to return it to that store and get a refund or at least get store credit? If so, how?

Most larger retail stores will give you at the very least store credit (usually in the form of a gift card) for returns with no receipt. Just go to customer service at the store, tell them it's a gift and you'd like to return it. You shouldn't have any problems.

Most stores (whether they're large, national chains or small mom-and-pop stores) won't give refunds without a receipt. If you returned this gift, more than likely you'll get a store credit for the purchase price amount of the item.

oldest trick in the book used by thieves. They rip off one store, and go to another store of the same name, trying to get an refund for a gift. For that reason, stores no longer give cash refunds. Exchange for another item or a gift card only.

I would think you can at least get a store credit. Without the receipt most will not give cash back.

Give it a try. Take the item there, and ask them very politely if it can be done. Most likely, they might give you store credit, or ask you if you'd like to exchange it with anything else. Sometimes, they will give you your money back too. U never know until you try.

If you get in store credit you'll be lucky. Don't expect a refund.

It depends on the store policy. You can just bring the gift to the customer service and ask if it is possible.

No you can't without a receipt. The alternative is to regift it to someone who will never know it's a regift.
