Best for the buck size wise is a rear projection set. Just be aware of the rainbow effect on DLP rear projection sets. Some people see it and others do not. Also, rear projection sets have a bulb that needs replacement every couple of years and the bulb is not cheap.

Avoid the Tube TV's as they will be useless as of Feb 19, 2009. Projections never had a good crisp clear picture so skip those too. Plasmas are the most expensive, but thats where your going to find the size your looking for. Anything much above 42" is going to need to be a plazma of the picture quality will be crappy. So it boils down to how big you want it and how fat is your wallet. Sony is a good brand as is Samsung, and LG.

If you are looking for the "best buy" home cinema projector, it's a refurbished Infocus SP4805 DLP projector which is selling for $325 at infocus.com > store >clearance center > refurbished home projectors > SP 4805.

Here's a sample movie shot of "A Good Woman" on a 92" diagonal wall/screen with the SP 4805 placed on a coffee table some 12.5 ft. from the wall:

Also check out the rave reviews and home theatre pictures by amazon.com customers [query: "Infocus SP4805"].

However, there is a downside to anyone who views this wonderful projector. Your friends and neighbors will be quite jealous of you since you did not spend so much money for setting up a movie theatre. They will say OMG and WOW! So, perhaps a white lie is in order when anyone asks: "How much did you spend on this projector." I leave that answer up to you because if you tell them the true price, they may be very angry with you for not sharing your selection with them and especially well before they spent mucho bucks on a large sized LCD or Plasma TV.

Good luck!

I don't think Sony is even close to being the best since they don't even compete in the plasma market. They quit making them after being beaten quality wise by Pioneer and Panasonic Plasmas.
