I adopted my chihuahua yesterday and she just got spayed. Will her personlaity change when she is healed? When they first took her out of her kennel, she turned out to be super hyper and a very jumpy and needy dog. When she is recovering , she turned out to be a very calm dog who is very sweet and follows you around. Did the spaying change her personality?

Also, I'm considering when they took her out of her kennel, she must be super hyper considering she is stuck at the shelter all day.. but I always thought of her as a very energetic dog.

no it does not change their personality. It may calm your dog down alittle bit, and can help make them less aggressive, and they will focus more on you, because they are less interested in seeking a mate.

She may be alot calmer than normal because she is healing. I had a husky mix that mostly just wanted to lay around and sleep after she got spayed.. it wasnt long before she was back to her energetic self.

When a dog is adopted from a kennel, the true personality doesnt always show right away either.. some of them suffer kennel shock and may be introverted and depressed.. some of them may be so excited to finally get out of that place and have a home!

Spaying will only change her ability to have pups. I have three chihuahuas. They are all busy, active little dogs. All of them follow me around the house and love sleeping under the covers with me at night. Chihuahuas can become one person dogs if not properly socialized. They're hyper but when they calm down, they're sweet little snuggle bugs.
If this dog is a rescue, you will have a friend and protector for life!

It is uncommon a dog's personality changes. What can change is eating habits (the dog may or may not eat more) and energy levels (some dogs become more relaxed and not quite as hyper). It is also debated as to whether this is actually due to spaying/neutering or if it is just due to age.

My dog, Maddie, is only 8-10 weeks old. I got her from a Local Shelter 11 days ago & when I took her to the vet to get her first puppy shots I asked this question.

They told me NO. My vet told me the only thing that MIGHT change in your dog is for him/her to slow down a bit. So, I'm considering if I should get my dog spayed because I love her being hyper.

Anesthesia will make dogs (or anybody for the matter) groggy and she may still be feeling a little tired from the surgery. It is good for her to take it easy for awhile

I personally have never had a dog who's personality changed after being spayed.

I don't think her personality is changing. She's recovering, so it's good that she's being calm. Once she's fully recovered I'm sure she'll be running around in no time. My family used to breed dogs and all the ones that we got spayed never changed personality.

The dog becomes a little calmer after being neutered so focuses on his owner more. Usually a dog is neutered just when they will naturally slow down from maturity anyway. They worry less about running off so focus on the owner more. They worry less about marking territory and impressing the Jones' dog etc. Neutering has changed my dogs for the better, they become better pets. People, not dogs, become more important. Service dogs are always neutered so they can focus on their job and often neutered by 7 weeks.

Spaying does NOT change personality!!! Personality is what it is spayed or intact... The only thing spaying will do is eliminate hormonal driven behaviors..that's it. Training and socialization are what help shape a dogs "personality" into a well mannered, well behaved dog. Add to that proper exercise and you'll have a well rounded well behaved dog.

No, spaying does not change her personality. Give her a few days to heal. Also just getting out of a cage would make most dogs excited. She will be fine...

They are usually more hyper being taken out of a cage at the shelter. I doubt it changed her she will be much happier and more content with you to follow
