We work varying shifts, some work 48 hours (2 days) on and 48 hours (2 days) off, others work 24 on and 48 off, all depends on what department and what house you work at.
Some do shift trade at 7 in the morning, others at noon.
But whatever it is, I am afraid it is not optional for the firefighter, it is set by management.

Each firehouse sets the schedule and depending on your "station", "chief" and you. ( City policy-depending on WHO employees you)
Some schedules rotate or some are set, it depends on "your position" and " tenure/ status" in the department.
Most firefighters I know their personal schedule, literally get an annual schedule of days "off" or "on" and those are shifts of 24/48 "on, then off" much like a doctor. They stay in the stationhouse and its well planned out. The find their own coverage if out sick, or need a day off with the written consent of the Captain on duty.
Many firefighters in my family. That is a hero's job and it takes a special spouse to live with a life like that.
They all have unions as well. I would contact them, for more details information.

There has to be a work schedule, or else things would be chaotic. You may have a fire somewhere and no firefighters in the station, because everyone decided to take the same day off.

I think they work 24 hours on (and sleep at the station) then 24 hours off. I think they also get every other weekend off. Senority may determine requesting time off, working holidays and overtime.
