I don't think it was directly cuased by the injuries. I mean it didn't help, but there is plenty of time between the races to recover from being banged up. The reality is that it's very difficult to do two back to back grand tours. Riders generally do one or the other well. Bettini felt strongly about peaking for the Giro this year and therefore left the Tour out of program as the season developed.

Because he raced the Giro in May and is racing the Vuelta and World Championships in September. It's almost impossible to be in peak condition for races in both the early and late seasons if you throw a hard three week tour into the middle. Until then he will be racing in the Tour de Wallonie, Clasica de San Sebastian, and the Deutschland Tour, but defending the World Championships is his priority.
