on protecting the right s of Children as they have these dogs of Vick's there might not be so many children killed as a result of neglect and domestic violence.

Although I am not a "pet person" and I do like animals and don't like to see them harmed, but I do like human beings more. So why don't we see such an uproar when our children are dying at a much faster rate/

It's a matter of what gets the public attention. Keeping in mind the public's attention span is very short. There are still way more efforts put towards child neglect than animal abuse, but they aren't making headlines at this moment in time, that's all.

Quite frankly, I am kind of glad to see so much media attention going to this story and seeing that the government is considering pushing for the maximum penalty allowed by law. Dog fighting is a horrible crime that is extremely difficult to prosecute and the charges almost never stick. Further, it is usually not brought to the public's attention and is often not considered a problem at all, let alone a serious problem, by the majority of the population. Dog fighting goes beyond animal abuse; people who abuse animals are usually likely to abuse people (especially children) as well, dog fighting rings are closely linked with drugs and organized crime, and it creates a significant public risk from dangerous animals.

I honestly don't believe that "children are dying at a much faster rate," than dogs. Statistics show that crimes against children not only have not increased significantly over the last two decades, they have actually DECREASED. This includes child abuse. Meanwhile, crimes against animals...particularly organized dog fighting perpetuated by gangs and drug dealers...have increased dramatically in recent years.

I'm not saying that there isn't a problem with child abuse and domestic violence or that we shouldn't be spending time and resources on those issues. There is a problem and people do need to take the time and effort to realize it and address it. But organized dog fighting rings are also a real problem in today's society and no less worthy of the government or news media's attention than any other serious violent crime.

well I for one would kill for my children. But I'd also put up a good fight for my dogs too. Obviously the two may differ, but they are both lives. But they say people who abuse animals then turn to people. Something to think about. Will we read Mike Vick beat the **** out of his wife/ gf next?

Are you forgetting Michael Jackson??? People are passionate about what they believe in and what they love. If the Gov and the press ignored the fact that Vic was abusing dogs, then it would make it seem just a little big more okay for people to do.. They have to make a deal about it, it's wrong and people need to know it's wrong.. They can't sweep it under the rug..
