I am taking my Chi to the vet this saturday for his first check up cause i just adopted him. When i adopted my cat, i remember they prescribed medicine for ear/eyes/cold and it wound up costing me $350. I got a certificate from the SPCA that covers the cost of the office visit, so my question is, say the vet says he has mites/a cough/cold... can i tell him that i dont want him to prescribe medicine to him and that i simply want the office visit check up ?

ok i didnt ask for peoples opinions on whether or not i should have the dog. But i dont feel like being ripped off for meds i dont need either. My rent is due this week, and as a person living in the REAL world, i dont have mommy & daddy to fall back on and in order for the dog to have a place to live, i myself need a place to live.
And of course i'll get him meds if he NEEDS them. Christ. I was just asking if BY LAW i can say NO

Yes of course just like at the Dr. They only suggest treatments they cant make you do anything. Im hoping that if your dog has mites or a cold you know how to treat him and you arent planning to leave these things unattended and yes they can be cared for at home. Good luck with your new doggie and dont be bullied by the vet to do what you dont want. Be informed and know what they tell you but dont just say all NO or all YES.

By law you can refuse any medications or treatments.
As for being "ripped off" most vets will NOT prescribe any medications or suggest any treatments that aren't needed. They are not in the business to "rip" people off but rather to help keep your pet as healthy as possible.
(cats adopted from rescues & shelters most often have URI and these NEED to be treated, if they aren't they can lead to more serious issues some of which will require more expensive treatments and some that are usually fatal so your vet didn't give meds just because they could)

Why would you refuse to buy the proper medication to treat your dog? That would be considered neglect and abuse to have the proper diagnosis and not properly be taking care of the problem.. I guess you could refuse the medication, but why even bother to find out if there is a problem if you aren't going to take care of it? Wonder why the shelter would consider you a good home?? Did they not ask you to fill out a questionaire and then ask you to agree to properly care for the dog???

You don't have to get it if you don't want to. It's totally up to you. A vet recommends what they think you should do, but it in the end it's up to you. We currently have 8 pets (5 cats, 3 dogs) and yes, sometimes bills and stuff get ridiculous. We tried to preserve the life of what used to be one of our oldest cats by buying it some special food which would digest more easily (she was kidney failure) and that food was like $50 for a smaller bag. Pets can be very expensive.

it would be in your Best interest to get the medication but they can't make you buy it. I look at it like this; if you were in a hospital and you had to buy medication for i don't know Arthritis for like 50 bucks if you didn't want to you didn't have to so basically no but i would recommend getting the medication or go to a different vet. officeâ¥âº

Of course you can. Vets can recommend all they want, but in the end you its your dog, you are paying the bill, and you make the decision.

You don't have to get the meds, however you are doing your pet a disservice if that is the case. You shouldn't have pets if you don't want to pay for their medical care if they are sick. If you ignore health problems now they will cost you more in the long run.
