Brake pads or an exhaust leak on a vehicle of that age and mileage is not unusual at all. Those are normal maintenance items and are not an indicator of a lemon at all.

You should have had the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic prior to purchase. The brake pads would have been obvious and it's entirely possible that the exhaust system would have been as well. The dealer would have replaced those items, very probably at the same price you paid. It would be worth asking them to help out on the repairs, but don't expect anything if you bought the car "as-is" without any warranty.

A lot of parts wear out on a car with 85k miles . , just wait till 100k and complain about all the parts that need changing out.
Brakes should be maybe 100 bucks and exhaust leak shouldnt be much to fix . Voted not a lemon

No, I think you did pretty well. If you bought any 6 yr old car and that was all that was wrong with it you should be thanking your lucky stars. Brakes are cheap. Something as simple as a Civic you might be able to do the brake job yourself. As far as the exhaust leak, it all depends on where it is. Is it at the manifold, the catalytic convertor, pipe, or the actual muffler? Anywhere other than the exhaust manifold is pretty easy and relatively cheap. A muffler for that little car might be $50-$60. They'll just cut out the old one and weld in the new one. The cat will be higher but replacement is just as easy.

I don't think so. If that's all you've had to change then it's possible that you didn't check the car out well enough before you bought. Brake Pads are routine maintenance. A hole in the exhaust is a lil more serious.. but not a big deal. Before you bought you should have really test drove it.. windows down and listening to anything strange. Plus you have to press hard on the brakes a few times as you drive to test the brakes out.. That's 2 out of the many things that you should have done. I wouldn't say it's a lemon, but they might have just sold you a car that the previous owner was hard on.

the price seems a little high.. did the car come with a state safety inspection ? the brake pads may have been at the minimum spec allowed 2 months ago.. an exhaust leak can develop anytime... unless there is evidence of the pipe or muffler having been puttied to quiet the leak .. well that is a scam

Lemon Laws only apply to new cars.
Brakes and an exhaust leak are nothing. Check to see if the timing belt was changed. If not, then change it, it will run you around $700, but you won't have to worry about it for another 90,000 miles.

No used car is perfect. Keep that in mind.

Hardly-those things are wear items and the car is 6 years old with 85K miles. Stuff breaks.
PS-there are NO lemon laws on used cars in any state.

Buying a car 6 years old is somewhat of a risk. I wouldn't think you have a case. Doesn't the lemon law apply only to new automobiles. Usually buying something used is Buyer Beware.

Lemon laws only cover defects that cannot be repaired by dealers, after three attempts.

Those are expected wear and tear repairs, @ 85 K miles.
