Sure...learned to speak German. And interestingly, Germans make up the largest single immigrant group to the US and proved that they too could learn a new language...English.
Wow!!!

OK, I am going to be honest. The first time I took a foreign language was my junior year in college. I was 21 years old and had never done so before. I was also up to my eyeballs in the advanced government and politics classes I needed for my major.
That said, I tried as hard as I could to learn Spanish, but it was incredibly hard for me. I was a straight A student through high school and college, but I barely pulled a C in Spanish. The only reason I got through it was one of my classmates was from Argentina and she tutored me.
I do know American Sign-Language, though!

Being smart doesn't mean you can learn another language. If you are patient and really willing to learn then nothing is impossible. Some people are smart but stubborn.

Hai. But it's not all about smarts - you have to be dedicated and make the effort to learn. It's going to take more than listening to a CD in the car for a few minutes a day to learn.

Si. Oui. Ja. Da. Hai. I don't find languages to be very difficult to learn. But since I don't have any regular use of them, my fluency has dropped significantly.
In the US, unlike many other countries, not only is there very little interaction with speakers of foreign languages, thanks to England, English is the lingua franca of business the world over.
I'd have to travel over 400 miles to get to the nearest place a different language is spoken (Ottawa, Canada).
