Several reasons.
1. I don't know if you've noticed, but the internet is a haven for people who like to get a reaction. I suspect there are a decent number of trolls lurking around.
2. Some people have very short tempers. Glance through the answers already listed here and you'll see how some more sensitive people could feel pushed to the defensive.
3. Some people are just ignorant, be they Christian, atheist, Muslim, or Buddhist. I wish I could say differently, but I can't.
And unfortunately, when you combine people from categories 2 and 3, you get some pretty disturbing results.

Why do so many (insert group here) get so angry when (insert action here) to them? I just don't understand.
Could it be because people are all just people and we all have our shortcomings? Do you really believe that Christians are worse than others when frustrated or do you just wish is was so.
Go ahead and provide some evidence of christians swearing and saying hateful things to you - I'll show you evidence of any group you choose doing the same.
Why do you try so hard to villianize Christians?

Why do so many atheists only notice when Christians swear at a person or say hateful things, and DON'T notice when Christians answer their questions with kindness?
If you can answer that, you'll have an answer to your own question.

I have not done that, but I will tell you that as a Christian, I have had other fundamentalist Christians do it to me.
They are by far the worst "cussers" ever! As my mama said, they can "cuss like a sailor."

Because they are programmed sheeple. Once a question goes beyond the canned responses they are all programed to say, their programming parameters go into abort/ default mode. Then you either get circular logic or bigotry and ignorance.

If that is how they act they clearly have some issues with there faith. If thats how fellow bretherin act than I think they either need to ask forgiveness and sort themselves out or think twice before classifying themselves christians

Because every group has individuals that don't live up fully to their 'ideal image.'
And especially on issues that are really personal to all of us, its easy to get riled up.
I'm not Christian but I would say look at the teachings, not the person representing it - although they too should be aware of their hypocrisy.

Because you ask hard questions, so insulting you provides a distraction to the lack of answer, and an outlet for their frustration.

Because when they are wrong and they know it, they cannot do anything else but be demeaning to you and make you feel less than them. Most Christians think they are better than everyone else and if you do not agree you should be hung by your toenails!
