Basically, you'll have to just ignore them. If you do a good job running that program, then they'll feel stupid for saying mean things to you.

First, give people nothing to talk about.
If, for example, you have a history of not completing tasks on time - then consider working on that aspect of your life before volunteering to do something that someone else will have to finish at the last minute. That gets old really fast.
If, for example, you are a braggart or a puffed-up person who craves attention and bowls people over to get what you want - work on that - before you volunteer. No one wants to work with a bully or a braggart.
If, for example, you are new to the congregation, you may need to actually show people that you are capable of running the program - by volunteering to do some of the dirty jobs every church has - such as helping teach Sunday school or some other less than prominent job. This teaches us humility anyway.
And finally, if your proposal is shelved - chalk it up to God's wanting you to wait for a while - so you can enjoy just coming to worship - instead of having to be a "mover and shaker."
You'll get your chance. Believe me. Probably sooner than you expect.

People are always gonna talk about someone- Just ignore it, do the best you can at whatever it is you're doing, and it will go away.....
They always find someone to talk about. That is the main reason I didn't like going to church- there's more gossip in there than a beauty parlor in the old movies!
Don't let it get to ya!

Insecure people always have something bad to say about others, but as long as you run the program well and stay out of trouble, people will realize that there is nothing more to say.

One can't stop people from talking, but one can certainly sway the conversation. Approach those whom you know and ask them for advice on running the new program. Tell them you would like their input on what they think will work best. Ask for their assistance. You will be surprised what results it will bring.

You can't! Someone will always have something to say about you and you should be happy. It's the ones who are not talked about that should be worried :)
