There's an old joke that the reason Mexico has no Olympic team is that any Mexican who can run, jump or swim has come to the US. It's a dumb joke but it has an element of truth.
We are a nation of immigrants. The majority of Americans have been here less than four generations. All these people who came here were people who wanted something better than what they had, they wanted to improve their lives, and they were willing to undergo some serious hardships to get it. Imagine moving to a country where you don't speak the language, where you know you're going to have to put up with some abuse, work your butt off at some crappy job and live in poverty until you get established so that -someday- you can have a better life? That's what these people decided to do. It was people like that who made this country what it is today!
My own grandparents were victims of a pogrom in the Ukraine. They were thrown out of the country because they were Jewish. They came to NYC with like $2 in their pockets. In her teens, my grandmother worked at a laundry, fixing clothes that were torn by the machines, and sewing on buttons that had fallen off. By the time she was 30, she and my grandfather had had bought their own laundry! By the time I was born, she owned an apartment building. The joke is that I got to be born in the US instead of in the Soviet Union.
The Republican Party came into being to abolish slavery, which was a good thing. But by 1890 they had become the party of exclusion and divide-and-conquer. They have encouraged and expoited every kind of intolerance--nativism, racism, religious intolerance, homophobia, etc. etc. They have people all riled up about illegal immigration, but they really LOVE immigration because a large pool of ready immigrant labor keeps wages down for everyone, and the GOP LOVES cheap labor. The Republican leaders who whine the loudest about illegal immigrations are the ones who have nannies, chauffeurs, and gardeners without green cards.

Immigrants can add much to America as they always have. Illegal immigrants are an entirely different story. Don't confuse the two. Hardworking people striving for a better quality of life are always welcome but our country was based on people who wanted to do it legally, learning English and blending with our culture and way of life. Those that want to throw our laws in our face by entering illegally do not care about English or our culture nor blending. They cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars and give nothing back. They pay no taxes, own no homes....in general put nothing into this country...everything goes somewhere else. Come here legally!!!

Many immigrants arrive in this country legally, and many of the ones who arrive illegally mean no harm - they are simply trying to create a life for themselves. Many immigrants take jobs that Americans would refuse to accept at such low wages or such deplorable conditions, and the American economy prospers because of that.
I generally find the immigration debate pretty amusing, because the very people who rail so strongly against "aliens" are the descendents of unwanted aliens themselves - what the Mexicans are to this generation, the Irish and other groups were to previous generations.

LEGAL aliens are a blessing to our country. They bring with them the dreams and hopes of a better life - and remind us that the US is still the best place to live - as flawed as it is.
ILLEGAL aliens are another story. While they want what everyone else does - a better life - they are not willing to come here legally. Sadly, it is these folks who get the attention.
As someone else pointed out, the legal ones are here working their hind-parts off building a better life and a better country...

Most Americans are immigrants or have ancestors that are immigrants except Red/aboriginal Indians are native to America. So basically most Americans are made up of immigrants and they are the ones who made America what it is today.

Of, course. The Asian population has boosted the U.S. economy. They are the real brainiacs of the world- and their children have increased academic competition in schools.
The Latino population has contributed immensely to the arts and entertainment. Plus, they are really great hard-workers. (They also have a great sense of humor)!
The Europeans have brought culture and very good food the America. They have diversified in helping America in so many
fields.
The Africans have also helped American in culture and sports. They also have given do much to the entertainment industry.
These groups, and many others and haven't mention, have done, and are doing things that a beneficial to the U.S. In fact, without these groups- America's economical and social well-being would slowly collapse.
(Also, America really consists of the children of immmigrants that arrived years past, only American-Indians are the true natives of this country).

Do you mean legal or illegal immigrants?
Most of the legal immigrants I know are working there asses off and don't have time to do anything bad. They are also very good people who really appreciate their opportunity to be in our country.
Most of the illegal immigrants I know are doing the exact same thing as the legal immigrants, except of course, being here illegally.

definite, Immigrants are doing a touch great things in u . s . a .. legal immigrants from worldwide do needed artwork right here in u . s . a . - they are docs, engineers, scientists, instructors, awareness workers, and intensely almost something you could think of a individual being or doing - my boss and a million/2 my co-workers have come right here from different worldwide places to stay and artwork, and function exchange into individuals. And, as over-hyped as 'variety' is, that's incredibly cool to stay and artwork in a worldly area with human beings of each and every description. unlawful extraterrestrial beings are a various tale, of direction...

Of course they are, but I hope you aren't one of those who tries to obscure the difference between legal and illegal immigrants.
We are overrun and overwhelmed by illegal immigrants, and unfortunately, it does taint the views towards immigration in general.
