Both are accurate tests. But testing intraocular pressure is not the same as glaucoma testing. IOP varies during the day and from day to day so any one test is not definitive.

And IOP is just a risk factor for glaucoma, not the disease. Glaucoma is diagnosed by considering a number of factors: assessment of the optic nerve though dilated pupils with a binocular viewing instrument, corneal thickness, field tests, assessment of the angle, HRT measurement of the retinal nerver fiber and IOP.

Once diagnosed and treated then IOP, fields and optic nerve will be assessed two to four times yearly.

The fear of that machine is perfectly normal. I have seen many people that get very freaked out by it, so you're in very good company.
