Is it neglect for a mother to make a 16 yr old and the father eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a week and make them wear dirty clothes because the mother didn't do the laundry in order for the mother to read the latest harry potter book?

"to make a 16 yr old and the father eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a week and make them wear dirty clothes"

Oh how cruel of her to tie them down and cram sandwiches down their throats like that! No, that's not neglect, that's ABUSE.

And taking away the washer and dryer so they couldn't do their own laundry is just cruel.

Edit to add: Do you always thumbs-down irony, or only when it's me?

Yes and no. It is wrong that she decided to neglect her duties as a mother to keep her family happy and healthy. I would be too embarrassed to do that. Of course you are not talking about a mother neglecting her baby or young child that can't fend for themselves.

There is no reason the 16 year old and the father can't do some laundry so they aren't wearing old clothes and as long as they have mobility and working arms and legs why they can't make a proper dinner.
That is a neediness from the father and 16 year old that maybe the mother needed to get away from if they are both that dependent.

Yes, it sounds like neglect. However, the MOTHER is the one being neglected and treated as a servant by her own loved ones. The father and a kid 16 years old should not only be ABLE to do their own laundry and cook for themselves, they should be doing it on a regular basis.

A mother cannot make her husband and 16 year old wear the same cloth and eat the same meals, because they are old enough to wash cloth and cook. My husband cooks for his self we take turns cooking and he helps with washing cloth. I am a stay at home mom and he still helps me out. Sounds like the Dad needs to get off his butt and so does the son and help out the mother. My children are 5 and 7 and my 7 year olds know how to turn on the washing mashine

No, the 16 year old should be able to do their own laundry, and the father should try cooking. Unless the mom is a stay at home, and the dad works. In which case, cook your husband some dinner.

It is never negligent when a woman takes time for herself, when one considers that she seldom has that luxury. I especially like the phrase "make them". As adults, no one makes a person do anything...it is a choice. If one chooses to wear dirty clothing and eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a week...so be it. It was nothing more than a ploy to make mom feel guilty. Cheers to mom for escaping drudgery and entering the world of Harry Potter.

Oh dear. Sounds a bit like neglect. But then again the father and the 16 year old are old enough to cook meals and do laundry. If it were a 3 year old I would say it is certainly neglect, but in this case, sounds just like a crazed woman, and a lazy husband and teenager.

It's hard to feel sorry for you, b/c you didn't expand on what you were doing while you expect all this from your wife/mom. The 16 yr old can do laundry. My mom taught me to do laundry when I was 11.
Maybe you should be asking, how hard does my wife/mom work if she can't even stop to read a book now and then, without the house falling apart? :) She's prolly resentful of her husband, for being so unappreciative, and doesn't care any more.

She neglected to teach her 16 year old how to do her own laundry and cook her own meals. The father should be capable of this as well.
