The alternate answer is:
The dog can run a very long distance into the woods if it takes spiral path starting from the outer circumference and spirals its way into the center. The actual distance would be the magnitude equivalent to the full area of the woods assuming the dog does not cover the same ground twice.

especially in the evening! We had to go a hiking to find the darn mutt in over a 1/2 hour he was way out and the barking was the only reason we found him. about 1mile out.
