Try Blender. It's free.

3ds Max and Maya are some of the best 3D software. They can be a little pricey.

One thing to keep in mind is the computer you are planning to install the 3D software on. Animation software like 3ds Max and Maya use a lot of system resources and the better your video card and processor are and the amount of RAM you have will make a big difference in the performance of the software,if you can run it at all.

Make sure your computer is a match for the software you purchase.

There are tutorials within the software and on-line so you shouldn't have trouble getting the information you want.

Yeah, Blender would be your best option since it's free and powerful, but no one has really created any big games on it before, just mini-games, about 5-15 mins of playing for each one.

Plus, learning it at first is kind of hard, but after you do you can create some great stuff.

Some other 3D software is Softimage/XSI, 3D Studio Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, and Rhino 3D. But those range anywhere from 300-5000$.
