Please please make sure they are capable of looking after them! When i was out with my kids today i saw obvious grandmas and grandads looking after their grandkids! With absolutely no idea of danger! 2 different grandmas with their grandkids in a busy carpark letting toddlers run around, one was on her mobile ignoring a appros 18 mth old girl toddle around in between cars alone! The other was too busy getting wet wipes etc from car whilst a toddler and a approx 4 yr old and approx 2 yr old were around the other side of the car out of her sight! She had previously had to go after the 2 yr old and said " Watch the cars they don't watch where they are going !"
Further up the road another obvious grandchild was being chased by grandad as she ran towards the main road! She was a toddler with no reigns and grandad had no control!
I have seen several examples of this over the years! The main one that springd to mind! Is when i had to do an emergency stop, cos grandma had pushed a pram out

into the road in front of me, just feet away from a crossing! I was so angry that i actually turned the car back and followed her, i even thought about following her home to warn her kids of what she did!
Please be careful, don't always think that your older parents are up to the job they once did so well with you!

well yeah I've seen parents do this stuff as well....it's not necesarily the older grandparents. Kids are most of the time out of control........especially toddlers. They do not Understand danger. Well we could all put our kids on leashes but you'd get a lot of glares that way too. I understand you being disgusted over the people on their cell phones....that's for sure irresponsible, but again, that's more than just older people....what about the ones in their car not driving well and have children in their backseats....Don't worry about other people so much....We all have enough stress in our lives to be dwelling on others! And If you do see something like a child running into a street and a old man not able to keep up...how about running to his assistance rather than judging him for wanting to spend quality time with his grandchild. Maybe the parent was right there as well and just didn't see it happening. I mean you don't know the situations these people are in. Kids are Kids....accidents happen....unfortunately. And sometimes there isn't someone to blame!

Yes!! I was at the park today with my daughter using the slide, swings etc. There was a grandmother there with her 16 month old grandson. There is a posting saying the water is full of E-coli bacteria and she was letting the little boy sit in it and play in the contaminated water, meanwhile there was a huge sign saying it was unsafe to go into. Then as they were leaving she almost let him run out in front of a car in the parking lot!! I know the little boys mom and I'm sure she would not be happy with her mother letting him go in the water.

not that out of control, but i have seen similar things with older grandparents not realizing the dangers of todays day & age. Good advice, do be careful. I've got mad at my mom several times saying "don't you know this is a choking hazard??" or "don't let him do that! he could get hurt!"
"BACK THEN" it was a lot more leniant and kids learned their lessons by getting hurt.. but not my baby!

It can be a real problem. I was a little older when I had children and one daughter was married 10 years before she had any. At my age, I can't even outrun the 18 month old.

I think a better way to state this is to be sure that ANYONE watching your children is capable. Dont assume that since they raised you or have children of their own that they will watch your children properly.
