i dont know if he is just being nice to me and hanging out with me b/c he likes me or b/c he feels sorry for me.

It doesn't matter whether he likes you or not. If he want's to hang out, have fun. Have as much fun with it as you can. Just don't do anything deliberately to hurt him. Have fun with him and in the end if he doesn't currently like you, he may get to like you.

Now "have fun" does NOT mean have sex. Not the same thing. Do what you like in common with him and create memorable experiences that will build your confidence in your ability to make good, fun choices.
