At the time that the loyalists settled in the Belleville area, they would probably have had "British" accents.

Before 1776, most Americans were actually just British colonists. After declaring independence, they were officially considered Americans. However, I doubt that their accents suddenly changed overnight. That occurred over time based on where people lived in the US and the integration of local natives or the slave population.

To reply to john's answer.. we're not more American at all!!
Grrr!

I live in southeastern Ontario. About 2 1/2 hours from Belleville and no, they sound like the rest of us. Most Canadians sound the same (normal sounding)... the only real accents there are here are the Newfie and the French opposed to the states where you have your NY accent, southern accent, even a PA accent. And then whatever the heck accent Mark Walhberg is. =)

Like I can jump one province over to Manitoba or even further such as BC and the people sound the same. Where as the states you jump from NY to PA and they sound different.

No. Most of Eastern Canada was settled by Loyalists at some point, not just Belleville.

Nah. What is "American-sounding" anyway. Each region has a distinctive twang that does not get recognized in the next one. At any given time anyplace, you can hear a hodgepodge of various accents.

Yes, in Southern Ontario. Really Southern Ontario is more American in general.
