It's good to keep jumper cables, tow strap, and a flashlight.
A first aid box is always good, never know when you're gonna need a band-aid!
After that, it's all in what you want to haul around.
In the winter, I keep an extra blanket in the trunk for our kids in case we get stuck/stranded, a snow shovel, & boots in case I have to dig myself out.
Have fun!

Depends on the country your in, at present in England you need nothing for emergencies. Most other countries in Europe you need a warning triangle and a first aid kit. If you don't know how to use them there is no point in carrying loads of tools. A mobile phone a water proof coat and your recovery service membership details are your best bet, and if your car is designed to have a spare wheel make sure you've got it and it is in good condition, a flat or illegal spare is useless and most recovery firms will charge for the call out if you haven't got it and it is all you need to get you home. Get someone who knows what they are doing to show you how to fit the spare or do basic car care course at night school it all helps.

yup - great idea to have jumper cables, just in case your car doesn't start.. and just in case some one needs a jump, its always nice to give someone a jump.
most cars come with a spare tired already it in. if not you can get one from a tire store. it won't cost as much as a regular tire.
first aid it always good.
some first aid kits come with some road flares... if not you can buy a box that comes with everything you need in case you break down, like road flares, flash light, extra things for your car.
Window scrapper!!!!! I never leave home without mine [lol] with the brush on one end and the scrapper on the other.
also i keep a blanket in my car just in case someone falls asleep or if you get stranded.
phone charger
extra fuses
owners manual
and thats about all i can think of.
GOOD LUCK

Depends what country you are in, if your in the US or Europe then you need stuff like hazard triangle, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, shovel etc... however in the UK there is no requirement to carry anything legally although it's advisable to carry the basics, First Aid Kit, Fire Extinguisher, Blanket.

When buying a Fire Extinguisher make sure that it is Powder, Water is useless on a Car Fire (unless you've accidentally set light to a piece of paper inside the car).

I would recommend storing at least two or three blankets, snacks (enough to last about two days), a first aide kit, a car charger for a cell phone, jumper cables, motor oil, and if you have children a few small toys and books to keep them occupied in case you are stranded for a while.
