Just like people, animals have to learn to live together. At first they might snarl, but after a while, when they get used to each other and both mature more, they should get along fine. I had a brown lab that would lie down and let the cats sleep on his stomach, and sometimes ride on his back. All I would say is don't show favoritism, cuz animals can get a sense of jealousy.

Keep your puppy form getting hurt!? HA! The cat will probably get bitten and your dog would probably get a scratch on his nose or something. The most pain will come to the new cat.
When you get your cat, put him/her in a box or carry him/her in your hand and let your dog sniff and whatever else he/she does to know the cat. If your dog seems to be getting aggressive, pull the cat away and put it in another place that the dog can't get too. Try again the next day. After a while he will know that he has to live with a cat.
P.S.
Hopefully your dog has no problem with the kitty! Good Luck!

I think they could get along ... it may take time though. Allow them to get acquainted slowly. Bring in the cat smell maybe off your shirt if you hold the cat for some time and let your dog smell it. when you bring home the cat, make sure the cat is in a box (that way IF cat becomes scared, you don't become a target for claws). Put the cat in another room and allow them to sniff through (under) the door. Bring the cat out of room alittle bit at a time till you feel the dog and cat can be left together. If either ones becomes aggressive or scared, tell them NO and separate them. I think they will do just fine!!!!!
Good Luck!!

If you want dogs&cats to get along, you have to get them to meet at an early age, because at early ages they don't know any better. So you have to introduce them at an early age. I'm not sure it will work if your dog is already a year old. But try it. Keep your kitten in your arms a lot and have the dog and the kitty smell each other so they know their scent and so they don't think it's a stranger. Hope this helped.

The only way to keep your "puppy" from being hurt from this is not to get rid of him just because you're getting another pet it probably isn't going to get along with (unless s/he's been raised around cats).

You can adopt a cat from a shelter that is used to be around other animals. That way you will be saving its life and you won't have to worry if the cat will have a problem getting along with your dog.

One or two swats on the nose from the kitten will put the pup in it's place. They can get along...just might take some time. Good luck.
