I have had fillings for over 40 years now and still no problem so I guess the answer is determined by your dentist ability to do a good job and the type of filling used. How you chew your food and what kind of food you eat probably has some kind of impact on how long your filling will last. I also think that hard candy or sticky gum or candy will diminish the longevity of you filling.

A filling should last a very long time but it depends on what typr it is and where it is in your mouth. If it's a large filling in a back tooth (amalgam or composite) it'll probably last years if you look after it (ie: don't eat too many toffees, etc.). But if it's a smaller one on maybe a front tooth it might last a long time but it might come out/fall off sooner due to the fact it has less keeping it in. It also all depends on what they use to place it; white composite fillings are placed using a bonding agent (acts like a glue) whereas silver fillings are just packed tightly into place.

White filling usually last 8 to 10 years and a silver filling can last up to 15 years and sometime longer. Keep in mind this is if they are done properly, and they usually are. This also depends on how well you take care of your teeth with brushing, flossing, and regular cleaning from the dentist.

Hopefully a year - if it doesn't then you need to use a soft metal like gold for an Inlay instead.
